A murder story

MURDER AT WALMART

Tired of constantly being broke; stuck in an unhappy marriage, a young husband decided to solve both problems by taking out a large insurance policy on his wife with himself as the beneficiary, and then arranging to have her killed.

A 'friend of a friend' put him in touch with a nefarious dark-side underworld figure who went by the name of 'Artie.' Artie explained to the husband that his going price for snuffing out a spouse was $5,000.

The husband said he was willing to pay that amount, but that he wouldn't have any cash on hand until he could collect his wife's insurance money. Artie insisted on being paid at least something up front, so the man opened his wallet, displaying the single dollar bill that rested inside.

Artie sighed, rolled his eyes, & reluctantly agreed to accept the dollar as down payment for the dirty deed.

A few days later, Artie followed the man's wife to the local Super Walmart Store. There, he surprised her in the produce department & proceeded to strangle her with his gloved hands. As the poor unsuspecting woman drew her last breath & slumped to the floor, the manager of the produce Department stumbled unexpectedly onto the murder scene. Unwilling to leave any living witnesses behind, ol' Artie had no choice but to strangle the produce manager as well.

However, unknown to Artie, the entire proceedings were captured by the hidden security cameras & observed by the store's security guard, who immediately called the police. Artie was caught and arrested before he could even leave the store.

Under intense questioning at the police station, Artie revealed the whole sordid plan, including his unusual financial arrangements with the hapless husband who was also quickly arrested.

The next day in the newspaper, the headline declared...

(You're Going to hate me for this...)

"ARTIE CHOKES 2 for $1.00 at WALMART!'

Oh, quit groaning! I don't write this stuff, I receive it from my warped friends and then send it on to my other warped friends.

Planet Stories, March 1952

If Astounding was the New York Times of science fiction magazines, Planet was the National Enquirer. It specialized in T&A covers, action packed stories and best of all, it printed many letters from its loyal readers.
It even published some of mine, although not in this issue. The editors then selected the "best" letter and awarded a prize of a original art work. I won one by Kelly Freas but it disappeared at some point over the years.

It took me years to realize that we readers provided a lot of free content.

But Planet did serve as a learning ground for authors such as Ray Bradbury and Poul Anderson, among others.

When all else fails, lie.

From the L.A. Times: Ban Ki-moon, the normally buttoned-up Secretary General of the United Nations, swept into Los Angeles during Oscar week playing the role of Hollywood pitchman. His message: Make global warming a hot issue. "I need your support," he told entertainment industry insiders during a daylong forum Tuesday that focused on recent heat waves, floods, fires and drought, which scientists link to human-induced climate change.

"Animate these stories!" Ban pleaded. "Set them to music! Give them life! Together we can have a blockbuster impact on the world."

Of course lying has been the basis of the man made global warming hoax since the beginning.

"To capture the public imagination,
we have to offer up some scary scenarios,
make simplified dramatic statements
and little mention of any doubts one might have.
Each of us has to decide the right balance
between being effective,
and being honest."

( in interview for "Discover" magazine, Oct 1989)

Natural disasters have long been a theme of science fiction. The above January, 1929 cover for Amazing Stories depicts a new ice age wiping out city skyscrapers. This was carried to the extreme in the late 70's and 80's when the hoax du jour was man made global cooling.

In fact, it made the April 28, 1975 Newsweek. Note the doom and gloom and call for governmental action.

"To scientists, these seemingly disparate incidents represent the advance signs of fundamental changes in the world’s weather. The central fact is that after three quarters of a century of extraordinarily mild conditions, the earth’s climate seems to be cooling down. Meteorologists disagree about the cause and extent of the cooling trend, as well as over its specific impact on local weather conditions. But they are almost unanimous in the view that the trend will reduce agricultural productivity for the rest of the century. If the climatic change is as profound as some of the pessimists fear, the resulting famines could be catastrophic. “A major climatic change would force economic and social adjustments on a worldwide scale,” warns a recent report by the National Academy of Sciences, “because the global patterns of food production and population that have evolved are implicitly dependent on the climate of the present century.”

snip

“The world’s food-producing system,” warns Dr. James D. McQuigg of NOAA’s Center for Climatic and Environmental Assessment, “is much more sensitive to the weather variable than it was even five years ago.” Furthermore, the growth of world population and creation of new national boundaries make it impossible for starving peoples to migrate from their devastated fields, as they did during past famines.

When the above didn't sell, global warming, here to fore undetected, was brushed off and trotted out to frighten the rubes and sell them the UN's redistribute the wealth program.

Amazing Stories and Buck Rogers

August 1928

In case you don't know, that's Buck Rogers first appearance. I like to think he is a active 83 year old somewhere out there on Mars keeping evil in check in his opera style tights

And for you youngsters you probably don't remember him buzzing through space on a Saturday morning at your local theater while the threatened Earth called "Earth to Buck! Earth to Buck! Come in, Buck!"

The special effects were so bad that even we of the great unwashed in '46 were not impressed but we still hung on as he thwarted evil on a weekly basis and always escaped from the previous week's episode ending threat.

Buck represented all that was good and maybe growing up believing that we were on the side of truth and justice gave the country the moral fiber to ultimately win the Cold War.

This copy is not in great shape, but not bad for an 83 year old pulp magazine. One similar sold for around $700. so it may be it will be worth more than my old NTI shares.

Also in this issue was the first installment of "Skylark of Space," by E.E. Smith, PhD. This was probably the first "space opera" novel using dark villains, daring heroes set among the vast reaches of space and time. Smith would expand the theme in his later novels. I have always felt that Asimov's "Foundation" series was inspired by Smith.

BTW - Smith was paid $70. for his ground breaking novel. Old authors and old pro athletes must both silently groan over being too early.

A talking pig.....Amazing

This is a true story, proving how fascinating the mind of a six year old is. They think so logically.

A teacher was reading the story of the Three Little Pigs to her class.

She came to the part of the story where first pig was trying to gather
the building materials for his home.

She read. 'And so the pig went up to the man with the wheelbarrow
full of straw and said: 'Pardon me sir, but may I have some of that
straw to build my house?'

The teacher paused then asked the class: 'And what do you think
the man said?'

One little boy raised his hand and said very matter-of-factly...

'I think the man would have said - 'I'll be a son of a bitch!! A talking pig!'

The teacher had to leave the room.

Did the aliens invade?

The year is 1947

Some of you will recall that on July 8, 1947, a little over 60 years ago, witnesses claim that an unidentified flying object (UFO) with five aliens aboard crashed onto a sheep and mule ranch just outside Roswell , New Mexico . This is a well known incident that many say has long been covered up by the U.S. Air Force and other federal agencies and organizations.

However, what you may NOT know is that in the month of April 1948, nine months after that historic day, the following people were born:

Albert A. Gore, Jr.
Hillary Rodham
John F. Kerry
William J. Clinton
Howard Dean
Nancy Pelosi
Dianne Feinstein
Charles E. Schumer
Barbara Boxer

See what happens when aliens breed with sheep and jackasses?

I certainly hope this bit of information clears up a lot of things for you. It did for me.

No wonder they support the bill to help illegal aliens!

The artwork is from Fantastic Universe, July 1956, one of the over 4000 scifi and fantasy magazines in my collection.

Unlike July 1947, July 1956 is noteworthy only in the fact that was the month in which I decided that a career in Naval Aviation was better than raising cotton in West Tennessee. To paraphrase Patton, I figured at least I wouldn't have to tell my grandchildren I spent the Cold War shoveling shit in Tennessee.

The Underwear bomber and tornados and stuff

DETROIT, Michigan (AFP) – A US federal judge urged the alleged underwear bomber Tuesday to use a lawyer rather than defend himself as she set his trial on terror charges to begin on October 4.

snip

Edmunds appointed Anthony Chambers, a prominent Detroit attorney, to act as back-up counsel and on Thursday again urged Abdulmutallab to accept his services.

"Have you discussed this matter with your family?" she asked, receiving an affirmative response from the accused.

"Have you received advice from anyone else?" the judge continued. "Have you considered changing your relationship with Mr Chambers and letting him represent you? You know he is a very capable and experienced lawyer."

As Abdulmutallab repeatedly affirmed that he wished to continue as his own lawyer, the judge reminded him that -- even if he accepted representation -- he could always come to her directly with any concerns or questions.

Now, are you ready?

"I understand you may worry about losing control over what happens to you," she said. "I can understand that is a frightening prospect and I am here to listen."

Aint that just soooooooo special!?

You know, if you put those lines in a movie script the Director would toss them as being totally unbelievable!

April 8, 1998

We had a cold front come through tonight and I was reminded of my last close encounter with nasty weather.

I had flown from Denver to Atlanta for a business meeting. The flight in was just short of terrible and I was convinced we were crashing several times. And that was just on the bus ride to the car rental lot. You should have been on the United 727 flight coming in.

I was staying at the Marriott in Norcross. The drive up was complete with flooded roads, traffic stopped, thunder, lighting and rain like it can only rain in the south mixed with some hail. But I made it, checked in, went to my room on the 12th or so floor, called room service and ordered a club sandwich, with pickle, one bag of chips and a glass of Cabernet.

Nothing like those fancy expense report dinners.

Service was prompt and I had just taken my first bite when a voice came from someplace advising that there was a tornado in the area and that all guests should come to the center of the hotel on the first floor for safety reasons.

I had had enough. A bad flight, no food on the plane, a nasty trip up and now I couldn't even enjoy my super delicious club sandwich with chips and a glass of wonderful house red?

Bull shit!

So I kicked back, munched on my sandwich, listened to the TV announce doom for all mankind and watched the rain drive into the window with a back light of continuous lightning.

It was like looking into a fog bank or cloud with a flashing light source.

Very amusing. And there I was enjoying my meal and wine and the show while the sheep were huddled together on the first floor.

Now, are you familiar with those super big plastic garbage bins that restaurants use? You know, the 15' x 15' footers. Dark green with two folding tops?

Yeah. Those.

Well, as I was enjoying the show and my wine one of those bins floated up outside the window like Dracula hovering waiting for the Wicked Witch of the West to come by and take him to the dance.

Hmmmm, I thought. I bet management is having trouble keeping everyone calm. They must need my help.

There is no known official record of time from room to ground floor. But if there is, I own it.

Biden was right!

Well, the Middle East is in flames, gasoline prices are climbing and the stock market is plunging.

How’s that old hope and changey thingee working out, dear America?

And while Biden was off in the time forecast, he was dead on in the content.

Opening an avenue for the McCain campaign to push its candidate’s strengths, Joe Biden says an Obama administration would face an international challenge in its first six months.

Barack Obama will face an international crisis early in his presidency, Joe Biden warns, fueling Republican charges that the Democratic presidential candidate’s own running mate admits Obama is a blank slate in the face of coming national security threats.

Speaking in Seattle on Sunday, Biden said he could guarantee that the world will want to find out if Obama is up to the job, which he assured voters he is.

“Mark my words. It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking,” Biden said.
“Remember I said it standing here. if you don’t remember anything else I said. Watch, we’re gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy. And he’s gonna have to make some really tough — I don’t know what the decision’s gonna be, but I promise you it will occur. As a student of history and having served with seven presidents, I guarantee you it’s gonna happen,” Biden continued.

Link

And Obama made it certain with his totally disgusting signs of weakness. He has truly destroyed our economy, our foreign policy and has set us up to be involved in a bloody war or become slaves to Sharia Law.

And he didn't even bother to try and hide who he is. He didn't have to. Our media did it for him.

Arizona wants ID if you use their hospital's ER

I see that AZ is back in the news for wanting people who use their hospitals to provide some ID.

That reminded me of what my old bud Poker Player had to say about his last trip to Phoenix.

Reporter: Before we start let me thank you for doing this interview for the paper’s “Travel Guide” section.

Poker Player: Glad to. And it really ain’t nothing....

Reporter: Well, I personally appreciate it. I mean if I do one more story about the Best Westerns of the red neck Rivera I may just faint.

Poker Player: Uh, guys don’t faint..

Reporter: Yeah. I meant puke.

Poker Player: Gotcha. Now, whatca want to know?

Reporter: Just tell us everything.. Maybe you could start with why you went to Arizona. I mean didn’t the Junction’s town fathers pass a law telling everyone to boycott them?

Poker Player: Nope. They discussed it but then someone said that the US AG hadn’t even read it so they decided to wait for an actual opinion.

Reporter: Oh.

Poker Player: Surprised you didn’t know that.

Reporter: But racial profiling is just so bad. And demanding to see innocent people’s papers…. But back to the trip.

Poker Player: Well, there are a lot of casinos in the Phoenix area....

Reporter: And you went there to play poker?

Poker Player: Well, it’s what I do. And besides I won a free entry into a satellite tournament for the WSOP on the Internet..

Reporter: Huh?

Poker Player: Sorry. I forget you don’t speak the lingo.... WSOP means the World Series of Poker. I won a seat in a satellite tournament that, if I won that, would pay my $10,000 entry fee and some spending money.

Reporter: Tell us about the trip.

Poker Player: Well, I drove down to Presleyville and flew Delta. And that was an experience.....

Reporter: Delta?

Poker Player: Naw, Delta was okay. But when I bought my ticket I used cash. And then when I went through Security I couldn’t find my Driver’s License so they pulled me off to one side and when I finally found it I tripped something in the machine and when they found I had $8,000 dollars on me they took me in a little room and wanted to know if I was a terrorist....

Reporter: Terrorist?

Poker Player: Yeah. They said that terrorists pay for tickets with cash and carry lots of cash. And besides, they were supposed to confiscate everything above $5,000.

Reporter: Huh?

Poker Player: Me too. I mean we talked and talked. I showed my invite to the tournament and pointed out I needed the $8,000 for the side games…....

Reporter: Side games? And they let you go?

Poker Player: Yeah. Finally. They made a bunch of telephone calls and then one said that since my papers were in such good order I could go on.

Reporter: So you weren’t a terrorist suspect?

Poker Player: Nope. But I was so short on time I could only get one Jack and coke before I had to get on the plane. That was tough.

But the flight was okay. Slept most of it, even if I was one drink short.

When I got there I went over and rented me a car. Gave’em a credit card and guess what.

Reporter? The card was no good?

Poker Player: No, no. My credit is pure gold…. They wanted to see my driver’s license. I asked why they cared since if I was stopped without one I’d get the ticket not them. But they said I needed to have all the ID to prove who I was.

Reporter: Did you get a nice car?

Poker Player: Yeah, no problem until I got to the hotel.
Reporter: And?

Poker Player: When I checked in I had my credit card but they wanted some ID. Driver’s license or Passport… Only I couldn’t find my license.. Long about then my cell phone rang. It was the rent a car people telling me I had left it there.

Reporter: Well that was luck. And at least you got to check in and rest a bit before going back to pick up the license.

Poker Player: Nope. They said I had to have proper papers to check in. So I just turned around and went back and got the license and checked in.

I must admit that I was a bit ticked but they said they were just following the rules.

Reporter: How’d the games go?

Poker Player: Not bad. I did win $1100 in the tournament. And guess what?

Reporter: What?

Poker Player: When they went to pay me off they had to have my driver’s license and a credit card and filled out a IRS form that showed that they had withheld income tax.

Reporter: Really?

Poker Player: Really. They even took out state income tax…said I could fill out a form and mail it, and the proper papers, and mail it to the state and ask for a refund as I was a non-resident.

Reporter: Well, that sounds good to me. I mean $1100…

Poker Player: Well, I did feel pretty good. So good I went out and had a big dinner and slept like a baby. Got up the next day and did some sightseeing and then played some more.

Reporter: And?

Poker Player: Got in a $5-$10 No Limit and won about $9000. Man I was hot.

Reporter: And?

Poker Player: Then I started thinking. I mean I got round $17,000 in cash and since I didn’t want to get all involved at the air port again I decided to just open me a bank account.

Reporter: How would that help?

Poker Player: Well, I figured I could use it as a checking account or just write a check on it one time and transfer the money into my account at Junction National…. I’m sure Robbie would let me do that… But she’d probably make me wait until the check cleared…

Anyhow, I went down to one of the local banks and they were all happy to see me until I told them what I wanted to do. They finally called some hoodoo in corporate and then decided they could take the money but I had to fill out all kinds of forms and show them my driver’s license. They said they would notify the government because of the size of the transaction.

Reporter: So that solved the problem?

Poker Player: Well, when I asked them why the feds wanted to know about it they got all huffy and I just said to heck with it and left. They said they’d have to advise Homeland Security of a suspicious event but I had the last word.

Reporter: Last word?

Poker Player: Yeah. Told’em to spell my name right.

Reporter: Well I bet that got’em.

Poker Player: Now don’t be going all snarky on me. I mean I had wore out my driver’s license…

Anyway I drove around a while to cool off. I stopped somewhere to fill up with gas.. Had to pay in advance and when I gave a $100 bill they marked it with a funny looking marker and then said it was okay but they couldn’t change anything higher than a $20.00. So I used my credit card at the pump..

Reporter: Let me guess, it was refused.

Poker Player: No, damnit. I’ve already told you my credit is good…. But what I had to do after I done the card trick was key in my Zip code….. The little lady behind the counter said it was for security…..

Reporter: Sounds good to me.

Poker Player: Me too. After that I went back to the hotel and went to bed. But before that I called Delta and told’em I was gonna be carrying a large amount of cash and could they help with Security…

Reporter: And they could?

Poker Player: Nope. Wasn’t their job. The guy did give a number in DC to call but I figured no one would be up in Disney Land East so I just told him I’d get home another way and get my money back on the return part of the ticket.

Reporter: And?

Poker Player: He said that worked so I decided to just drive back. I could drive up to Vegas for a day or two and then drive up to Denver and play some in the mountain casinos and then over to Kansas City and check them out and down to St Louis and play some…might even take in a Cardinals game or two and then on down to Preseleyville and home.

Reporter: How’d that work out?

Poker Player: Well, outside of having to show my ID every time I turned around it was fine… I did call the rent a car folks and get me a bigger car and find out what the cost would be to drop it in Elvistown… They said just come on by and they’d fix me up, so I got up the next morning and took off.

Reporter: Uneventful departure?

Poker Player: Well, I did drive by this school where the kids were demonstrating,

Reporter: Demonstrating?

Poker Player: Yeah, waving Mexican flags and shouting Yankee go home…

Reporter: And what was their problem?

Player: I asked this policeman who was just standing there that question.

He said they were upset over people the police thought were illegal aliens having to show some ID.

Reporter: Well we wouldn’t want people to be profiled and have their civil rights violated….

Democrats play the coward card, we catch'em lying and Other Worlds

If you don't read Day by Day you should.

Was the Democratic Governor lying then or are the Democrats posturing on TV lying now?????

The following was published 11/10/10.

Madison — Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle's administration on Friday told Republican Governor-elect Scott Walker that he would have to cope with a $2.2 billion deficit in the state's upcoming two-year budget, but this brighter-than-expected forecast contained more than $1 billion in hidden pain.

To arrive at the favorable estimate, the Doyle administration's estimate assumed that Walker and lawmakers would make spending cuts that have yet to actually happen - two more years of state employee furloughs, no pay raises, a virtual hiring freeze and belt tightening in state health programs. Without that $1.1 billion in savings, the state's projected shortfall rises to $3.3 billion - a significant increase over previous estimates that put the gap at between $2.7 billion and $3.1 billion.
The shortfall and the efforts to close it could affect everything from schools and health care to local governments and taxpayers.

The "revenue projections released Friday underscore what Governor-elect Walker has said for months - the state of Wisconsin is facing very serious budget challenges," Walker transition director John Hiller said in a statement. "Further, we believe that the true budget shortfall is much higher than indicated by the projections released today

Now we have the President's people, Organizing for America, coordinating and attacking a sovereign state. That hasn't happened since the Civil war. But we shouldn't be surprised.

After all, he explained what he was going to do in this video.

When I was a lad, dreaming of Other Worlds, I would have never thought that our President would make such a naked declaration of his ambition to introduce national Palace Guards and Brown Shirts.

I would have been wrong

April 1953

Other Worlds was started by Raymond A. Palmer in 1950.

Palmer was a scifi fan in the 30's and achieved the dream of dreams when he was made editor of Amazing Stories in, I think, 1940. (Yes, I'm too lazy to dig through my collection to find the exact date.) He saved Amazing by introducing more action and color but his decision to play up Richard Shaver's claim that evil beasts lived in caves within the earth boosted circulation to new highs but eventually collapsed and severely damaged Ralmer's reputation within the field.

Never the less, his formula of pretty girls, despicable villians and true heros made space opera enjoyable for years and years.

Wisconsin teachers, Democrats, Poerty and why I oppose government unions

What the Democrats are accomplishing in WI.

They're proving that you should never argue with an idiot.

On to other things.

This is either:

a) The teachers of WI being attacked by the evileeeee Republicans.
b) The taxpayers of WI being attacked by the evileeee teachers.
c) The cover of Fantastic magazine Nov-Dec 1952.
d) None of the above.

What the damsel in distress needed was for Buffy the Vampire Killer to show up.

And of course it is the Nov-Dec 1952 issue of Fantastic, a popular fantasy magazine with a smidgen of science fiction. It is just one of the over 4000 magazines in my collection.

WI redux?

Democrats may soon be loading up those buses in Madison and heading their mobs toward Nashville. The Tennessee state senate Education Committee voted Wednesday to abolish collective bargaining with teachers.

More poetry?? A bit of doggerel.

Those Mountaineers they have no fears,
With them you should not trifle.
They'll hang your balls on mountain walls,
And shoot them off with rifles.

Time to make something clear.

I don't have a problem with unions organized to represent workers to/within a private company.

In fact, I watched my Dad help organize a location of a company. I can well remember the slurs and taunts. I can still hear a merchant, who depended on us for his welfare, declare that no man was worth more than $5.00 a day. From that day forward we never spent a dime with him.

My Father and my Father-In-Law were Teamsters. At one time I was an IBEW member.

It is beyond obvious that government unions should never have happened and that they are totally out of control with a result that they are making more money than the tax payer can afford and are bankrupting the system.

This must be fixed or the whole system will collapse.

And I find that the idea that a union will get non biased treatment in negotiations from the same people they support and give money to is ridiculous.

That is a pure and demonstrable conflict of interest. In fact, some would call it bribery.

Sarahwhore, Gannett Forum, WI, Memphis schools and Fantastic Summer '52

Somebody didn’t get the civility memo.

Gannet’s Jackson paper, “The Jackson Sun,” has a host of posts in its Pluck Forum using the name “Sarahwhore.”

I would say that residentfan isn’t a fan.

Fair or foul?

In a few weeks the good citizens of Memphis will vote to decide if they want to give up their school charter to Shelby County.

You remember Memphis City Schools, don’t ya?? Yeah. They’re the one that has a 26% pregnancy rate at Frayser High School. They also have failed miserably in managing the school system.

Now they want someone else to come in, clean up their mess.

And if they decide to do it, the citizens of Shelby County will be required to do just that. By state law they can’t say no.

Folks, that is just wrong. Memphis has had a crime problem for years. It has a long record of murder records second only to Detroit. It has also had a city government that was rumored to be corrupt and a tax rate that is staggering. Business has fled and population has declined along with the average income level. Its infrastructure is crumbling… and those are just the good things.

Now the people who proved they couldn’t manage a can of beans want someone else to pick up the tab.

Did I mention that the city’s political base is almost pure Democrat?

Does that surprise you?

Does what’s happening in WI surprise you?

It shouldn’t. The schools of this country have had money showered on them like manna from heaven. Yet the product of the schools has steadily declined.

And the people of WI are saying, via the people they elected.

Enough!

Now the teachers will tell you that the parents have failed to prepare the kids for school. And I agree. So let’s revisit Frayser.

We lived in Frayser in the early 60’s. It was a thoroughly middle class suburb with no crime and lots of perfectly kept lawns. Most of us who lived there expected to have a better car, a better home and a better life for ourselves and our children as time went on. Oh, we knew that nothing was carved in stone and we knew that we had to work and succeed in our chosen professions, but we expected things would improve as we improved.

What happened? Well, a funny thing happened on our way to total personal freedom and personal rights. As a society we forgot about responsibility. And we forgot that parents, some more than others, need help in raising their children. While it is the parents who must pound it into the head of their female children that they must not get pregnant, it is society who must demonstrate to the child that getting pregnant out of wedlock leads to bad outcomes.

Society didn’t. Look at Hollywood. Look at adulation over actresses who have children out of wedlock by the Lame Stream Media. Look at advertising that portrays over and over that you must drink alcoholic beverages to have fun. And when Dad steps in Sister and Junior merely have to look at TV to see how stupid Dad is and how out of date Dad’s standards are.

The result? 26% pregnancy and a Frayser that looks, to a larger degree than anyone will admit, like a Third World country.

But none of this let’s the teachers off the hook in Memphis, or WI. For whatever reason the system is broke and the pay and benefits have gotten out of control and the employers are saying, “Enough!”

Fantastic Volume  1 No. 1
Summer 1952

By 1952 Ziff-Davis decided that Fantastic Adventures, which was a companion to Amazing Stories, should be retired and replaced with a pocket book sized magazine selling for (gasp!) 35 cents featuring fantasy slanted towards the horror side which Weird Tales had sold for years.

It was an attempt to produce a class magazine. Unfortunately the market didn't exist to support it so over time it went back to space opera adventure.

But strangely, some of the predictions have proven more accurate than those in pure science fiction.

On budgets and rapes and gardens

Times are hard...

I got a pre-declined credit card in the mail.

Wives are having sex with their husbands because they can't afford batteries.

CEO's are now playing miniature golf.

Exxon-Mobil laid off 25 Congressmen.

A stripper was killed when her audience showered her with rolls of pennies while she danced.

I saw a polygamist with only one wife.

If the bank returns your check marked "Insufficient Funds," you call them and ask if they meant you or them.

McDonald's is selling the 1/4 ounce.

Angelina Jolie adopted a child from America ..

Parents in Beverly Hills fired their nannies and learned their children's names.

My cousin had an exorcism but couldn't afford to pay for it, and they re-possessed her!

A truckload of Americans were caught sneaking into Mexico .

A picture is now worth only 200 words.

The Treasure Island casino in Las Vegas is now managed by Somali pirates.

Congress says they are looking into this Bernard Madoff scandal. Oh Great! The guy who made $50 Billion disappear is being investigated by the people who made $1.5 Trillion disappear!

I was so depressed last night thinking about the economy, our long, unnecessary war, jobs, my savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc., I called the Suicide Hotline. I got a call center in Pakistan and when I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited, and asked if I could drive a truck.

Hat tip to Jimmy M!

On to more serious stuff.

In the I wouldn't want to get pissed off and say something nasty department.

On Friday February 11, the day Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak stepped down, CBS correspondent Lara Logan was covering the jubilation in Tahrir Square for a "60 Minutes" story when she and her team and their security were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration. It was a mob of more than 200 people whipped into frenzy.

In the crush of the mob, she was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers. She reconnected with the CBS team, returned to her hotel and returned to the United States on the first flight the next morning. She is currently in the hospital recovering.

There will be no further comment from CBS News and correspondent Logan and her family respectfully request privacy at this time.
CBS Link

"dangerous element" You think?

"no further comment" Not even a "that was naughty of them?"

We can be thankful for the women and the 20 soldiers.

We can scorn CBS for its despicable timidness. PC strikes again.

And all I have heard all day is that we must work together to balance the budget and avoid the catastrophe just over the horizon. To do this we must raise taxes and cut spending.

Uh, how can I say this???

Dearest Assholes:

You never cut spending in a deal like this so take your suggestions and shove them where the sun doesn't shine.

Get back to me when you have cut federal employment by 10%, wages by 10% and closed down the Department of Education, Energy, EPA,  HUD and this has happened 5 years in the past. At the same time we can eliminate all foreign aid and NPR. More details to follow.

BTW - Since I ain't the one who pissed away trillions I don't see me agreeing to take it in the shorts for your hen house ways. By that I mean don't even think about touching Social Security or Medicare.

I hope there is no confusion in this matter.

It has warmed up nicely.

I have spent two days picking up limbs, raking the oak leaves away from the house and from in the flower beds. You know. The ones that fall all winter.

And I then put the baggier on the John Deere and started bagging the leaves and trash for depositing in trash piles, with plans to dump on the garden as compost to till in and cover to reduce weeds and hold moisture.

Bless Global Warming.

My boss said that the garden must be bigger this year and she plans to fight food inflation with more freezing, pickling and canning. So I will up the number of tomato plants and okra and expand my potato, cabbage, onion, cucumbers, bell peppers and squash crop.

I don't bother with corn or the various peas and beans because they are plentiful at the farmer's markets and you don't have to center your life around when the corn or peas is ready.

Gardening is always fun in February, work in July.

Speaking of warming.

Startling Stories September 1950

Another warm Lassie from Bergey. I remember reading the novel, "The Cybernetic Brains" but I don't  remember the girl. Ah. Life is full of disappointments.

Be my valentine???

Minor rants and petite complaints, aka this stuff just bugs me department.

Why does every commercial with an adult male show me a guy who needs a shave? Has Gillette gone out of business?

I mean first we have business people, led by the computer/IT geeks showing up in sloppy garb. Supposedly it showed they were free thinkers and had independent thought. Funny, none of them ever thought of a nice suit, white shirt and tie.

But this latest trend is just blah. You want me to pay attention to an actor pushing your product?? And he can’t shave?

Please.

The Donald is running for Prez??? Sorry Donald. Your comments are far too logical and correct to be taken seriously. Stop at once and start worrying about gay marriage and dope smoking. Then we’ll pay attention. (That’s sarcasm, boys and girls.)

Obamie is going to balance the budget by not spending money that he would have spent otherwise using money that he never had. Okie dokie.

Oh, did I mention high speed trains zipping from place to place with passengers stepping from the train directly to public transportation??

Where does he get this stuff??

I doubt he gets it from scifi. Of course this issue, May 1950, features "Wine of the Dreamers." So who knows?

BTW - You will note that the young lady is scantily clad while our hero is covered from head to toe, gloves included. Obviously our future ladies have built in environmental controls.

The cover was by Bergey, one of the best known cover illustrators. His T&A covers, tastefully described as GGA (Good girl art) titillated a whole generation of young (and old) men.

And John D. MacDonald's featured novel went on to be published in hard cover, quite an accomplishment for a scifi story in 1950.  He became famous for his Travis McGee series of mystery thrillers and is close to being the seller of more books that anyone else of that genre.

But I digress........on to the exciting stuff??

Dumber and stupid.

On Feb. 15, on the recommendation of its Peace & Justice Commission, the Berkeley (Calif.) City Council is set to vote on a resolution to invite "one or two cleared" Guantanamo Bay detainees to resettle in Berkeley.

Peace & Justice Commissioner Rita Maran told me that the idea was to invite to Berkeley "the kind of people you'd like to have living next door to you or dating your cousin."

Link

I guess that no one has told Rita that about 20% of those terrorists released have returned to attack the US.

Wait..... She's a Leftie...Now I understand.

Know what I would like to see? The voters of Berkeley throw Rita from the train, aka quit funding the “Peace & Justice” whatever that is and make her get a real job in the real world doing real work.

Oh, you though I meant Rita is dumb and stupid?? No. That’s the taxpayers of Berkeley for putting up with shit like this.

Technical and other problems.

Shawn sent me this video on how to fix your Blackberry.

Cheers!

Science fiction, atomic power and other things

Astounding January 1954
Self Portrait

Not really, but close enough. We dreamed of rockets and space travel and great things. I wrote a high school science paper on satellites and received an F. Unrealistic the teacher said.

The Soviets weren't listening.

Astounding was the second scifi magazine. Volume 1 No. 1 came out January 1930 and unlike Amazing it was more action and less science. John W. Campbell, Jr came along in late '37 and established a reign and readership based on science rather than fantasy. If Gernsback was the Dean of Science Fiction, Campbell was the Godfather.
One of the most famous stories that Campbell published was a novelette in March of 1944, "Deadline," By Cleve Cartmill. The story described the search for atomic power and weapons and mentioned U-235 by name. That brought an FBI visit.

And since the NY Times was still an American paper no one complained.

Now they would demand the agents be jailed and FDR arrested.

Astounding was the first scifi magazine to go "digest" size. During the war the paper shortage and a poor binding system made for copies that have not stood the test of time very well.

But ideas transcend paper, ink and glue.

Bits and pieces and Amazing Stories

February 1942
Amazing was the Daddy Rabbit of scifi magazines. Hugo Gernsback published Volume 1 No 1 April '26. By February '42 the staid science based stories were gone except for those published in Astounding Stories and the genre was populated with action stories. While the covers promised sex and Bug Eyed Monsters (BEM) ogled scantily clad babes the actual stories followed the Saturday western movie formula. The hero mounted his horse (rocket) and rode off while the heroine school mam pined away in unrequited love.

Many people remember Edgar Rice Burroughs for his Tarzan stories and the movies made from them. He also wrote copious science fiction.

Meanwhile, back in the 21st century...we have Ice World.

We also have a world in which the Lefties are cheering Obama's plan to provide a $7500 incentive for people who buy electric cars.

No one seems to mind that only the wealthy can afford them and that we are broke. Nope. Our man Obamie just wants to keep on pushing his green agenda and destroying the economy.

Regarding Egypt:

There was a young lady of Niger
Who smiled as she rode on a tiger;
They returned from the ride
With the lady inside,
And the smile on the face of the tiger.

---- William Cosmo Monkhouse

Fox is reporting that another illegal alien has been arrested for murder and other crimes..... He was arrested years ago to be deported but was released and didn't come back for the free ride.

Fancy that. Criminals breaking the law.

Environmnental wackos from the 30's!

The guy has to wear a space suit but the gal only needs a two piece. I always said women are tougher than men!

That's the cover of Fantastic Quarterly  from Summer of 1950, one of the 4000 or so scifi and fantasy pulps I share my office with.

The story concerns a scientist, much loved at one time, who, when the world won't give into his demands to do what he needs for it to do in order to save it, attacks it and almost wins. But he loses.

As punishment he is exiled into space in a rocket ship that has material in that will always be repelled by Earth... ..... Of course he picks up a girl friend, a side kick and returns to save the world from evil that is destroying the environment.

Did I mention that Al Gore has started a new TV channel and has been joined with Keith Olbermann late of MSNBC? And yeah.... Arianna H has joined AOL.....

Maybe global warming will yet be overcome.

Meanwhile back in the world...

Another Repub Congressman has resigned after being caught doing the really stupid thing of sending his pic to some female who asked on Craigslist for a nan who is financially secure and doesn't look like a toad.

Well, the guy doesn't look like a toad but I am sure he will feel like one by the time his wife finishes with him.

But resign? Doesn't he understand that sex is private.... Oh, wait. He's a Repub and not a Demo.......

And yeah. Believe it or not AOL has given Ms Huffington and Mr. Lerer more than $300 million for "Huffington Post." Good ole AOL. Getting hosed over Time Warner wasn't enough.

Arianna Huffington and Ken Lerer, co-founders of the Huffington Post, are said to be walking away with a combined $80 million to $100 million from an original $2 million per person investment -- but so far AOL stockholders aren't seeing that kind of return.

Since Feb. 1, the price of AOL shares has dropped from $23.85 to $20.89 at yesterday's close.

With 106.7 million shares outstanding, that means AOL has shed $315 million in value over the last five trading days -- which happens to be exactly the same price AOL agreed to pay to acquire HuffPo.

Ny Post

Your friends won't always tell you but the market always will.

And I gotta wonder if the super intelligent executives who did this will actually get their bonuses???

Yes. Yes they will. And that is one of the things wrong with our current management system. The guys who make the big bucks never pay the price. Just the worker bees and the stock holders.

Later. Time to throw some more wood on the fire.

O'Reilly and the President and dumb educators.

We don't do snow very well. And if I had wanted a snow every week I would have stayed in Denver.

If Mostly Cajun tried to drive into northern MS or western TN yesterday he had a miserable trip.

When it snows here people like to get in the left lane and drive at 15 mph when conditions would allow a safe 30-40 MPH. They think that even if the outside temp is 33 and there is only slush on the highway that the snow people will run out and push them into a ditch.

My fav yesterday was a lady driving a Chevy Impala that had snow covering both passenger side windows, the rear window and the driver side rear window. She was merrily driving down the center lane, changing lanes whenever she felt the need. Of course she couldn't see and was depending entirely upon the other drivers anticipating her every move and getting out of her way.

I tried to watch O'Reilly last night but became sick with all the bowing and scraping by his "guests" over his interview with Obama. If I hear him saying he is "looking out for the folks" one more time I may puke. What he is doing is making money for Fox and O'Reilly.

And I have no problem with that and enjoy him when he can keep his super sized ego under control. But when he starts calling people who write nasty emails "koolaid drinkers" I flip the dial.

Hey Bill! They are your fans! Live with it! And sometimes their advice is good!

This was sent by Grant M and others.

Speed limit enforcement

And under the heading of educators and other foolish thiungs.

Why the Department of Education should be eliminated.

MANSFIELD (CBSDFW.COM) – Some Students at Mansfield ISD schools could soon be learning Arabic as a required language. The school district wants students at select schools to take Arabic language and culture classes as part of a federally funded grant.

The Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) grant was awarded to Mansfield ISD last summer by the U.S. Department of Education.

As part of the five-year $1.3 million grant, Arabic classes would be mandatory at Cross Timbers Intermediate School and Kenneth Davis Elementary School. The program would also be optional for students at T. A. Howard Middle School and Summit High School.

Well, if they can tell you you must buy something they can tell you that Arabic is the language of the future. And that your child must learn it. And what kind of a nessage does that send to our enenuies and those moderate Muslims who don't know who to support?

The DOE has identified Arabic as a ‘language of the future.’ But parent Joseph Balson was frustrated by the past. “Why are we just now finding out about it?” asked Balson. “It’s them (Mansfield ISD) applying for the grant, getting it approved and them now saying they’ll go back and change it only when they were caught trying to implement this plan without parents knowing about it.”

Why are people who take up education as a career so often shown to be in favor of things the tax payers do not want??????
