One of my more Leftist buds left

this regarding my post re gasoline prices:

AWBONE OF AN ASS
So you think Congressional Democrats, who have had majority control for one year, should share the blame with Junior for high gas prices? Bush was critical of Al Gore in the 2000 campaign for being part of “the administration that’s been in charge” while the “price of gasoline has gone steadily upward.” He didn't mention Congressional Republicans, who had held the majority for six years at the time
.

Uh yes. As the party of environmental wackos who managed to stop drilling in Anwarm, yes. Yes I do. They also have prevented any new oil refinieries being built for 30 years or so.

In January 2000, at the New Hampshire Republican Primary debate, Mr. Bush said, "What I think the president ought to do is he ought to get on the phone with the OPEC cartel and say we expect you to open your spigots...And the president of the United States must jawbone OPEC members to lower the price..."
And in June 2000 he said, "I would work with our friends in OPEC to convince them to open up the spigot, to increase the supply," Mr. Bush, the presumptive Republican candidate for president, told reporters here today. "Use the capital that my administration will earn, with the Kuwaitis or the Saudis, and convince them to open up the spigot."

You may note that the Repubs didn't escape my disgust.

The average US price of regular gasoline was $1.46 a gallon when Bush 43 assumed the presidency.

Gas Buddy puts today's price at $3.229.

And in many parts of America, especially rural areas far from distribution pipelines, consumers are facing the imminent prospect of the $4 gallon.

Meanwhile in Washington, White House press secretary Dana Perino admitted on March 5 this year that the President is "disappointed that they decided not to increase production." President Bush himself whined of OPEC's intransigence that "I think it's a mistake to have your biggest customer's economy to slow down." Powerless now as throughout his presidency, Bush feebly concluded "Until we change our habits, there's going to be more dependency on oil."

Which just goes to show the American people what happens when they place their trust in the jawbone of an ass.

Also since 1/01 we have been attacked and are in the process of fighting two wars.

But, so what?

The fact of the matter is that the Demos won't say a word. They want the economy to be in bad shape and for us to be loosing in Iraq. That they think will let them gain control of the White House and Congress.

So quit complaing and tell me what the Demos are doing to fix the problem. I mean besides demand change and hope......You obviously are a Hussein supporter.

  1. Quit complaining? You go first.

Junior didn't say he was going to get oil from ANWR. He said he was going to jawbone his pals the Saudis to increase production.

You can't square this to your satisfaction so you're trying to change the subject and make excuses for your pal, The Decider.

Seven long years with Junior at the helm, and the first six years of that was with his Bush league lapdog GOP Congressional majority giving him everything he wanted. And you want try to convince people that Democrats are to blame. Lotsa luck with that.

This Novermber is not going to be a good time for Republicans.

  2. “Whether that will translate into mobs with pitchforks and flaming torches is highly doubtful, but the Repubs should be concerned. They happen to control the White House and thus will receive most of the blame.”
Being an Independent cuss I don’t have to make excuses for the Repubs as you seem to feel you must defend the Demos.
And the issue on Anwar isn’t Bush jawboning, but the handmaidens of the wacko environmentalists, aka Left Wing Demos and RINO’s, keeping us from drilling in ANWAR as well as other places within the US.
In other words the Demos don’t want to be part of a solution, they just want to serve their special interest groups, destroy the economy and hope that will get them elected.

BTW – I have called both my Senators raising complete hell with them for doing nothing, and for letting the Pres ignore the issue.
    How about you??

  3. Funny thing these days, everybody who walks and talks like a Republican just happens to be an independent or libertarian instead. Like you say, that means you don't have to defend the collosal Republican failure of the past 7 years. Not like you ever voted for Bush or any other Republican, or supported any of their ideologies, right? I don't blame you I guess, I'd be trying to change my identity too if I'd been cheerleading the worst president of all time.

Hey, I'm not the one who criticized Clinton & Gore by making empty promises. That was George W, so if you don't mind I'd like to stay on that subject just a tad. I don't care if you blame Congressional Republicans or not unless you can set your Wayback Machine back to 2000 and do that as the Republican Presidential nominee. And make sure the 'liberal' press runs you comments night and day. Congressional Republicans got a pass then and you're wrong to say it's unfair now for Congressional Democrats escape criticism.

I don't have a fix for gas prices and there might not be one because of peak oil. But assertions that they can be fixed are so much a part of rhetoric used by Bush and his party, they own the problem. And with his ideology-first mentality, Bush has until quite recently ignored all remedies except increasing oil supplies. Neglecting alternatives like improving efficiencies and developing other fuel sources has made things much worse.

But you might find comfort in knowing I am doing everything I can to support improvement in this and most of our other problems: I'm making sure we get a Democratic president elected this year, and increase Democratic majorities in the House and Senate as much as possible.

BTW, one of your excuses for the president you don't have to make excuses for was, gas prices are higher because we're fighting 2 wars. That's true to say of the war in Iraq, which Junior and President Cheney lied us into. Invading Iraq was a collosal blunder or worse, so I don't see how it's not their fault gas prices have resultingly gone up.

But this is not how Laurence Lindsey – President Bush’s senior economic advisor - saw it in 2002. From the Washington Times, 9/19/02:

As for the impact of a war with Iraq, “It depends how the war goes.” But he quickly adds that that “Under every plausible scenario, the negative effect will be quite small relative to the economic benefits that would come from a successful prosecution of the war.”

“The key issue is oil, and a regime change in Iraq would facilitate an increase in world oil,” which would drive down oil prices, giving the U.S. economy an added boost.

How's that workin' out for ya at the gas pumps these days? But what the heck, President Cheney and the rest of the neocons got their adventure in Iraq.
