Another school Another dumb thing

I remained convinced that "educators" as a class have less common sense than the national average.

MARIETTA – Campbell Middle School has adjusted its curriculum on the Middle East after a parent complained that material provided for one assignment “positively slants towards Islam.” The creator of the materials, though, said she doesn’t understand the objection.

I will give the school kudos for responding to the problem, but note that the creator does not. What was the issue??

Hal Medlin said the assignment, sent home with his seventh-grader in late August, was aimed at helping students outline the pros and cons of school uniforms. The material includes a letter from a woman who is explaining why she is “proud and happy” to be Muslim and a list of seven conditions for women’s dress in Islam.

snip

“My name is Ahlima and I live in Saudi Arabia. … Perhaps two differences Westerners would notice are that women here do not drive cars and they wear abuyah. An abuyah is a loose-fitting black cloth that covers a woman from head to toe. I like wearing the abuyah since it is very comfortable, and I am protected from blowing sand. … I have seen pictures of women in the West and find their dress to be horribly immodest. …Women in the West do not have the protection of the Sharia as we do here. If our marriage has problems, my husband can take another wife rather than divorce me, and I would still be cared for. … I feel very fortunate that we have the Sharia."

Now I would say that anyone with any education, or exposure to any world news would read could read that paragraph and see that it is outrageously slanted. Anyone that is, except for the people in the education business.

But Sharon Coletti, the founder of Roswell-based InspirEd Educators and the creator of the material at issue, said she does not see Medlin’s objection.

“This particular sequence is a two-day social studies lesson. They read this letter and then examine stereotyping. The next lesson is a compare and contrast on the role of women in the middle East. Yes, the Muslim girl stereotypes Western women, but are there ways we stereotype Muslims? I have no idea what the objection is,” she said.

Link

No idea???? Well we could start with the fact that it paints an incomplete and inaccurate picture of women's plight under Shariah law.

I wish I had Ms Coletti's email address. I would send her an email asking if she was aware that women under Shariah Law are often not allowed to be educated, stoned for being accused of infidelity, killed for bringing "dishonor" to the family...you know... like being alone with a non family male or wanting to marry someone else....and among other things, this:

Just days after Saudi Arabia’s king announced landmark voting reforms for women, female activist Sheima Jastaniah was sentenced to 10 lashes for defying the nation’s ban on driving, according to fellow activists.

Link

And, of course, we always have the "we must have empathy" excuse.

All public middle school students in Georgia spend 12 weeks learning about the Middle East, and that includes religions in that region, including the dominant Islam, she said.

“It’s important for kids to have some empathy for other people in the world. Some people think we’re trying to teach their children to be Muslims, and that could not be more ridiculous,” Coletti said.

I would add:

No, Ms Coletti, you aren't trying to teach them to be Muslims. You are trying to teach them that Shariah law and its application is the moral equivalent of western societal norms and laws.

And I would ask just one additional question. In those 12 weeks in which you teach them about religion in the Middle East...... does that include Christianity and Judaism??

To Whom Does The Land of Israel Belong?

Subj: To Whom Does The Land of Israel Belong? An Israeli Sense of Humor at UN set the record straight.

An ingenious example of speech and politics occurred recently in the United Nations Assembly and made the world community smile.

A representative from Israel began: 'Before beginning my talk I want to tell you something about Moses: When he struck the rock and it brought forth water, he thought, 'What a good opportunity to have a bath!'

Moses removed his clothes, put them aside on the rock and entered the water. When he got out and wanted to dress, his clothes had vanished. A Palestinian had stolen them!

The Palestinian representative at the UN jumped up furiously and shouted, 'What are you talking about? The Palestinians weren't there then.'

The Israeli representative smiled and said, 'And now that we have made that clear, I will begin my speech..'

Just out of curiosity, Jim, since you acknowledge it "ain't PC and isn't correct", but then immediately say it "has a rin of truth" to it, ...

... which parts have the "ring of truth", Jim?

I mean, since everyone already knows he's a "black guy", which parts do you think have a "ring of truth" to them, and which parts are your usual .............. well, .........

Now Yman, don’t be getting all lathered up here when I don’t immediately answer your questions. I’ll get to’em but I do have other things going on.

Now, let me see. “Ring of truth.”

Well, laying aside that he is black, his early life was spent in a country that is predominantly Muslim and his fathers were Muslim, although that ended around the age of 10. Does that mean he is a Muslim? No, but even he noted that his background gave him a unique ability to solve problems. Does that explain why his interview in France made the infamous claim that based on numbers America was one of the largest Muslim countries in the world? Or does it explain why in his speech in Egypt he claimed that there were 7 million Muslims in the US?? (PEW says the number is around 2.35 million.) And why did he go out of his way in Turkey to explain that America is not a Christian nation? We were formed based on Western civilization concepts heavily influenced by Christianity and a vast majority consider ourselves a Christian nation, but proud of our secular government that protects the rights of minorities?

Link

Was he just pandering?? If so, why? Why didn’t he take the opportunity to tell them who we are. Why the false impression???

Would a “ring of truth” indicate his belief in what should be?????????

Communist? When I view Obama I reminded of the joke that was circulating in Denver shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union. The joke was:

“What is the difference between Boulder and Russia?”

And the answer is: “There are no communists in Russia.”

(To help you understand, Boulder is the home of the University of Colorado and is well known as a center of socialist/Marxist teaching.)

Not to mention Joe the Plumber’s answer from candidate Obama…

BTW - This is me.

Quit making things up. I mean if I were you I would say, quit telling lies.... But I'm not and I answered your comment at 8:11AM

September 29, 2011 8:46 PM

Wait, I just found your comment. My software system decided it was spam and consigned it to the spam locker.... Seeing as how spam is useless unhelpful stuff I can see how the software dumped you.

But I wouldn't want to not let you have your say, so:

So a "ring of truth" means it's okay to suggest someone is a Muslim or Communist, based on the fact that YOU think they make comments sympathetic to Muslims or based on a joke you heard - as long as you make some generic disclaimer that some part of the fairy tale "ain't PC and isn't correct". Funny how you dropped the birther part of the "joke" ... as though that's going to make your silly story more credible.

Heh.

C'mon, Jim - don't be afraid to embrace your inner TPer! You can cheer for the death of the uninsured! You can boo gay soldiers serving overseas! You can call the President a Muslim, illegal alien, communist, "black guy" without being ashamed! He//, listening to those comments, why not just bring up your favorite fairy tale about Shariah law - you could claim he wants to bring Shariah law to the White House!

What?

You think those don't accurately represent your positions? Awwweeeeeeee .. c'mon. Based on your comments, while they might not be "PC or correct", ...

... I'd say they have a "ring of truth" to them.

Heh, heh, heh ...

BTW - I know it's you, Jim, as is obvious from my responses. I just think it's funny that you post under "anonymous", rather than using your (already fake) screen name.

Posted by yman to Tall Cotton at September 29, 2011 10:11 AM

Now I know that you love to make things up. But when you say that I have booed gay soldiers serving overseas, or anywhere for that matter, well, that dear Yman is a flat out lie. Sorry to stoop to your level but I didn’t want you to misunderstand my comment. Long before DADT I served with gay sailors and this may shock you, there were no problems. One I knew got into trouble for his actions off base and two for their actions with each other on the base. Otherwise the gays didn’t say anything and the straights didn’t say anything. Sort of DADT in the Old Days.

And cheer for the death of the uninsured?? Really, you lie again and you know so because I have specially, here and in Talk Left, noted my support for a universal system modeled on Medicare. So I think you deserve my comments and this comment from Mr. Cat.

Now, I explained to you why the comments have a “ring of truth.” Rather than answer my points you revert to the old “How dare you say that about our President.” Why not address the issues?? Because you can’t. Read the link I provided it proves what I said.

As to why I use Anonymous, not that it is any of your business, but there is a technical issue that when I try to sign in remotely it doesn’t work. So there you are. Got any other BS complaints you want to make about something that is none of your business?

Anyway, thanks for playing and proving that you don’t know how to debate…. But then we knew that.

Yman proves he knows how to insult ---- debate? No.

Anonymous"? ... "ANONYMOUS"?!?! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH ... You can't even use your fake name on your own blog! OMG, Jim ...

Spouting off and trying to reframe. eh??? Well, that's what you do best.
And if you didn't know that was me..... well, come to think of it, you are so dumb you probably didn't.

So here goes. "Hey! Over there in the corner with the dunce hat! That was me!

BTW, Jim - You're LYING again - two lies in one post! First, you didn't merely claim (as you say NOW) that "Obama has demonstrated his lack of support for Israel and that he believes that the US, his country, is responsible, as a "colonial power," for all the evils in the world and that his intent is to "fix" the problem." That would simply be a silly winger opinion that - by definition - can't be proven or disproven. In reality, you went beyond that and claimed that Obama called for Israel to return to the '67 borders. That is, as I've proven repeatedly and with the FULL quote as well as quotes from two Israeli PMs, a complete LIE.

Link

You know what makes debating with such as you fun?? It is that you always call someone a liar, even when they are merely stating an opinion?? Or, heaven forbid, stating what they see as the truth.

Did you ever hear about catching more bears with honey?? No? Well, based on your personality I can see why. BTW - Tell me. Did you have a older brother who was always correcting you when you were children?? Is that where you get this urge to follow people around and make incorrect claims and when they disagree call them liars??

But I digress.

And, of course, I proved my point about why Obama has the foreign policy he has by noting his actions. He is, if nothing else educated, although well beyond his intelligence, so all of that "learning" he picked up as a child of a Muslim father who deserted him and later as a step child to a Muslim father in Indonesia soaked right in. White man bad. Brown man good.

It was, further poured into him in HI and later when he toured the Muslim world and then during 20 years sitting in the Rev Wright's "Black Liberation Theology" compounded by associating with such people as Bill Ayers and his wife. Yes indeed. If there ever was a poster child for "America Bad Europe Bad" it is our Dear Leader.

And what else did he learn? Well, as a product of a culture that said, "Ain't you special!" he learned that all he had to do was show up and talk. That worked well when he was BSing his way through college and such jobs as "community organizer."

But not so well in the real world.

And I used your own information to prove you wrong. He said he wants Israel's borders to be based on what they were in 1967.. then he tries to act like he didn't mean it by talking about "swaps."

Yeah. Like he didn't know that when he said "1967 borders" there was no way his buds in Hamas, Hezbollah and the PLO plus Syria and the Muslim Brotherhood would not understand that meant "If we can sucker these dummies in, you can go in, take what you want and I will make sure America doesn't bother you."

Lie???? What BS you mouth. That is the truth and you cannot refute it.

Secondly, you didn't, as you claim NOW, invite me and Jondee "to a DEBATE". That would be lie number two. Don't believe me? Look at your own post:

"Dearest Yman and his sidekick Jondee. You like to call people liars and insult.

Well, come on over and we'll have a insult fest. But be warned. I promise you.... you won't like it! So maybe you should stay huddled in a site that you know I can't fight back in."

I'm sorry. I thought everyone knew that when you debate with you it is an "insult fest."

What you actually did was invite us to an "insult fest" - (BTW - is that a Jim original, or did you pick that from a grade school thesaurus?) - but why would I want to debate you HERE? First of all, you can "fight back" at TL just as much as anyone else can - that is, if you ever stop whining about insults while (at the same time) hurling your own with an "LOL" or ;-). Secondly, this is a POS personal blog that (judging by the lack of any comments) is seen by maybe three people in a year - if you're lucky. Why even bother? Thirdly, why post here when all you ever do is delete the comments you don't like? I'm not talking about comments that violate your (double-standard) rules. I'm talking about comments that, without using profanity or insults, point out the errors in your, well ... let's just call them "factually-challenged" posts ... as well as your hypocrisy, among other things. Why bother to post when YOU get to decide what comments get deleted and then LIE about them afterward?

No thanks.

BTW - You never answered the question. Why is it you wingers only love to TALK tough when you're hidden behind an anonymous keyboard? Even safely hidden behind the internet, you whine and complain, calling me "Shadow" and say you're "scared" of me.

Gotta admit ...

... it's SERIOUSLY funny.

Delete your comments??? Nope. Comments by the Dark Avenger?? Yes. He has been banned.

So there you are. You provided no proof that I lied but you did prove again that you are a first class insulter.

Talk tough?? Really? Look. It is you that calls people liars. It is you that follows me around.

Scared? Nope. Concerned by your actions. Yes. They appear on the edge of being sick and close to cyber stalking.

And no, I won't write on TL what I have just done here. Jeralyn doesn't like it and I try and follow the rules of the blog's owner.

You should try it.

But since you have nothing to say beyond yelling "liar!" that would not be possible.

So there you go. Thanks for showing up and allowing me to let you prove my point!

"Refute your comments about Obama"? How do you "refute" a silly, winger, OPINION derived from an overactive imagination? Particularly when that winger feels free to not only read the mind/intentions of others, but also base his fairy tales on LIES.

On the plus side, Jim, I've just quadrupled the number of comments on your silly blog in just a couple of days!

Indeed. Even Israeli PM
Netanyahu himself pointed out just two days later that Obama was not calling for a return to the '67 borders.

The precise delineation of those borders must be negotiated," he said. "We will be very generous in the size of a future Palestinian state. But, as President Obama said, the border will be different than the one that existed on June 4, 1967.

I thought a basic reading comprehension class might be helpful, but I guess it really doesn't help with deliberate lies.

Hmm, you seem to be having trouble grasping facts. The conversation is not about why Joe ABC Whoever said. It is about what Obama said.

And you can wiggle and squirm and try to change the subject but Obama said what he said.

Democrats say.....Suspend elections

Well, we should have known this was coming when they said let no crisis be unused.

And we should have known it would be floated by a Democrat far away from DC.

Speaking to a Cary Rotary Club today, N.C. Gov. Bev Perdue suggested suspending Congressional elections for two years so that Congress can focus on economic recovery and not the next election.

"I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won't hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover. I really hope that someone can agree with me on that," Perdue said. "You want people who don't worry about the next election."

I've got a better idea.

Why don't we impeach Perdue for crimes against the Constitution?

Well, we now have had, among other things, 57 states, the need to build intercontinental railroads, navy corpse man...... Now we want billionaires to pay taxes based on the same rate as a Jew. What Jew? Which Jew? A Janitor Jew or a Jew Janitor?

For someone who supposedly will roast Perry alive in any debate....that is just awful.

I won't even ask the obvious.

Was this another Freudian slip??

Okay. I just did.

Lady Gaga loves Obama

Lady Gaga paid $38K for an Obama fund raiser and attended same. Now that’s a surprise. Not. I wonder when Monica will show up?

New York's superb police commissioner, Ray Kelly, says that the New York Police Department now has the capacity to bring down a plane, under extreme circumstances. Kelly was commenting on the fact that cities, in fast-developing situations, cannot depend on the federal government alone.

UrgentAgenda

If New York comes can Boston be far behind?? And Atlanta and Chicago not to forget LA? San Fran and SeaTac and Ohara too? Somehow the idea of Surface to Air Missiles under the control of the country’s police forces does not flip my Bic. Spread too thin, with too little control is an obvious problem. A very scary and very serious problem. Not enough vetting and too few background checks. Ft Hood redux anyone?

Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown as our successful cotton farmer’s son is now discovering, in case he ever forgot. He doesn’t give the answers the Far Right wants and the press, who wouldn’t piss on the shoes of Rick Santorum and company if his socks were on fire, are echoing every attack by the Repub midgets and Obama Lite, aka Romney, on Perry.

Perry is suffering from "not being a beltway Repub" just as Palin did so he can, as she did, expect scant help and a lot of criticism from the so-called conservative media. They remind me of a poker player who is afraid to make the big bet so they try to just hang on hoping they can just stay in the game.

He's also the number one target of the lame stream media. They and their Masters, aka Leftie Democrats, fear a Perry candidacy above all things. And a Perry/Cain duo makes them tremble in their Gucci's and toss and turn in their satin sheets.

Having said that, he's in a fight. Right now he's being attacked by a bunch of candidates who, having little to show except for their support for the "social issues," think they can win by making him as small as they are.

Perry should start reminding them that such things as in state tuition for the illegal alien children brought here by their parents, something I oppose, is a state issue and that as a President he wouldn't have any say in that but he could close the border by providing the resources, something no President has ever done.

It's called "fixing a problem by prevention.” An old Engineering trick. I suspect Perry learned it while flying those Air Force planes around thunderstorms rather than through them.

Bill of No Rights

I don't remember who sent this to me. It has some interesting points.

The following was written by State Representative Mitchell Kaye from Cobb County, GA.

We, the sensible people of the United States, in an attempt to help everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid any more riots, keep our nation safe, promote positive behavior and secure the blessings of debt-free liberty to ourselves and our great-great-great grandchildren, hereby try one more time to ordain and establish some common sense guidelines for the terminally whiny, guilt-ridden, delusional and other liberal bed wetters.

We hold these truths to be self-evident: that a whole lot of people were confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim that they require a Bill of No Rights.

ARTICLE I:
You do not have the right to a new car, big screen TV or any other form of wealth. More power to you if you can legally acquire them, but no one is guaranteeing anything.

ARTICLE II:
You do not have the right to never be offended. This country is based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone not just you! You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc., but the world is full of idiots, and probably always will be.

ARTICLE III:
You do not have the right to be free from harm. If you stick a screwdriver in your eye, learn to be more careful, do not expect the tool manufacturer to make you and all your relatives independently wealthy.

ARTICLE IV:
You do not have the right to free food and housing. Americans are the most charitable people to be found, and will gladly help anyone in need, but we are quickly growing weary of subsidizing generation after generation of professional couch potatoes who achieve nothing more than the creation of another generation of professional couch potatoes.

ARTICLE V:
You do not have the right to free health care. That would be nice, but from the looks of public housing, we're just not interested in public health care.

ARTICLE VI:
You do not have the right to physically harm other people. If you kidnap, rape, intentionally maim or kill someone, don't be surprised if the rest of us want to see you fry in the electric chair.

ARTICLE VII:
You do not have the right to the possessions of others. If you rob, cheat or coerce away the goods or services of other citizens, don't be surprised if the rest of us get together and lock you away in a place where you still
won't have the right to a big-screen color TV or a life of leisure.

ARTICLE VIII:
You don't have the right to demand that our children risk their lives in foreign wars to soothe your aching conscience. We hate oppressive governments and won't lift a finger to stop you from going to fight if you'd like; however, we do not enjoy parenting the entire world, and do not want to spend so much of our time battling each and every little tyrant with a military uniform and a funny hat.

ARTICLE IX:
You don't have the right to a job. All of us sure want all of you to have one, and will gladly help you along in hard times, but we expect you to take advantage of the opportunities of education and vocational training laid before you to make yourself useful.

ARTICLE X:
You do not have the right to happiness. Being an American means that you have the right to pursue happiness - which by the way, is a lot easier if you are unencumbered by an over abundance of idiotic laws created by those of you who were confused by the Bill of Rights.

Two hundred and seventy one year old business closes down

For nearly two decades the Marlborough Tavern prospered near the center of town off Route 2. When gas prices spiked several summers ago, business took a big hit.

"It fell right off a cliff. It went down from June of 2008 to July of 2008," Bradley recalled

In many respects businesses are like old people. They are doing fine until they break a hip then they can't quite recover and then pneumonia comes along and kills them.

Along with his co-owner, he put money into the business to keep it afloat for the last three years, but with business down nearly a third it became too much. Bradley says the losses of food after Tropical Storm Irene disrupted his cash flow too much and he needed to shut the Tavern's doors.

The increase in gasoline prices prevented a recovery and like the old person and pneumonia the disaster they could have survived if business had not been bad for three years kills them.

That's about as simple and easy to understand as anything I can think of yet our politicians can't seem to grasp it.

9 Things That Will Disappear In Our Lifetime

Jimmy M sent me this list. Kinda interesting. I’ve added some comments in italics.

Whether these changes are good or bad depends in part on how we adapt to them. But, ready or not, here they come. . .

1. The Post Office
Get ready to imagine a world without the post office. They are so deeply in financial trouble that there is probably no way to sustain it long term. Email, Fed Ex, and UPS have just about wiped out the minimum revenue needed to keep the post office alive. Most of your mail every day is junk mail and bills.

Me: Given that companies exist that could assume the tasks of the USPS, maybe. But that assumes that Congress would let them charge what they want for the services. I lay 10 to 1 that it won’t happen.

2. The Check
Britain is already laying the groundwork to do away with chegks by 2018. It costs the financial system billions of dollars a year to process cheques. Plastic cards and online transactions will lead to the eventual demise of the check. This plays right into the death of the post office. If you never paid your bills by mail and never received them by mail, the post office would absolutely go out of business.

Me: This assumes that everyone will have Internet access. I don’t know what the current percentage of people having Internet access is but it is probably less than 70%. I lay 100 to 1 it won’t happen in the foreseeable future.

3. The Newspaper
The younger generation simply doesn't read the newspaper. They certainly don't subscribe to a daily delivered print edition. That may go the way of the milkman and the laundry man. As for reading the paper online, get ready to pay for it. The rise in mobile Internet devices and e-readers has caused all the newspaper and magazine publishers to form an alliance. They have met with Apple, Amazon, and the major cell phone companies to develop a model for paid subscription services.

Me: Again this assumes that everyone has Internet access. They don’t. As for paying for it, perhaps. But the market is not as large as they think. I lay 100 to 1 that newspapers won’t disappear in the foreseeable future.

4. The Book
You say you will never give up the physical book that you hold in your hand and turn the literal pages. I said the same thing about downloading music from iTunes. I wanted my hard copy CD. But I quickly changed my mind when I discovered that I could get albums for half the price without ever leaving home to get the latest music. The same thing will happen with books. You can browse a bookstore online and even read a preview chapter before you buy. And the price is less than half that of a real book. And think of the convenience! Once you start flicking your fingers on the screen instead of the book, you find that you are lost in the story, can't wait to see what happens next, and you forget that you're holding a gadget instead of a book.

Me: Again this assumes that everyone has Internet access. Again, they don’t. I gave my grandson a Kindle. It’s neat. He’d rather read a paper book. Plus, there is a market for books because there are people like me who just like the feel and smell of books. Music and video are different things. I lay 100 to 1 that books will not disappear in the foreseeable future.

5. The Land Line Telephone
Unless you have a large family and make a lot of local calls, you don't need it anymore. Most people keep it simply because they've always had it. But you are paying double charges for that extra service. All the cell phone companies will let you call customers using the same cell provider for no charge against your minutes

Me: Huh? What happens when a disaster shuts down your electric power? What will keep your cell phone charged? And what are the government regulations establishing a certain level of service? They don’t exist for cell phones. And all those “cheap” plans?? They can, and will, go away when the cell phone companies reach a certain market penetration point. I say keep your land lines for security and inexpensive Internet access you’ll need. 100 to 1 this won’t happen.

6. Music
This is one of the saddest parts of the change story. The music industry is dying a slow death. Not just because of illegal downloading. It's the lack of innovative new music being given a chance to get to the people who would like to hear it. Greed and corruption is the problem. The record labels and the radio conglomerates are simply self-destructing. Over 40% of the music purchased today is "catalogue items," meaning traditional music that the public is familiar with. Older established artists. This is also true on the live concert circuit.. To explore this fascinating and disturbing topic further, check out the book, "Appetite for Self-Destruction" by Steve Knopper, and the video documentary, "Before the Music Dies."

Me: I agree that big changes are coming. People are becoming more and more unwilling to pay big bucks for an album that may contain only 1 song they like. Thus, with internet access, or via cello phone, people will buy one or two songs at a time…. Wait! That’s what we did with the 78’s and 45’s in my youth!

7. Television
Revenues to the networks are down dramatically. Not just because of the economy. People are watching TV and movies streamed from their computers. And they're playing games and doing lots of other things that take up the time that used to be spent watching TV. Prime time shows have degenerated down to lower than the lowest common denominator. Cable rates are skyrocketing and commercials run about every 4 minutes and 30 seconds. I say good riddance to most of it. It's time for the cable companies to be put out of our misery. Let the people choose what they want to watch online and through Netflix.

Me: Years ago I attended a CATV trade show where one of the speakers said the limit wasn’t technology, but content. He was right. But again we run into the Internet access. Worse, movies and games require HIGH SPEED Internet access. That’s probably less than 45% of the country. I lay 50 to 1 that this won’t happen.

8. The "Things" That You Own
Many of the very possessions that we used to own are still in our lives, but we may not actually own them in the future. They may simply reside in "the cloud." Today your computer has a hard drive and you store your pictures, music, movies, and documents. Your software is on a CD or DVD, and you can always re-install it if need be. But all of that is changing. Apple, Microsoft, and Google are all finishing up their latest "cloud services." That means that when you turn on a computer, the Internet will be built into the operating system. So, Windows, Google, and the Mac OS will be tied straight into the Internet. If you click an icon, it will open something in the Internet cloud. If you save something, it will be saved to the cloud. And you may pay a monthly subscription fee to the cloud provider.. In this virtual world, you can access your music or your books, or your whatever from any laptop or handheld device. That's the good news. But, will you actually own any of this "stuff" or will it all be able to disappear at any moment in a big "Poof?" Will most of the things in our lives be disposable and whimsical? It makes you want to run to the closet and pull out that photo album, grab a book from the shelf, or open up a CD case and pull out the insert.

Me: Again we run into “Internet Acess.” I wonder if the guy who wrote this had any technical knowledge. Will the number of “appliances” increase? Yes. Will the home computer disappear? No. And if anyone is stupid enough to store important personal info on a server located heaven knows where… well, that’s stupid. 100 to 1 this won’t happen.

9. Privacy
If there ever was a concept that we can look back on nostalgically, it would be privacy. That's gone! It's been gone for a long time anyway. There are cameras on the street, in most of the buildings, and even built into your computer and cell phone. But you can be sure that 24/7, "They" know who you are and where you are, right down to the GPS coordinates, and the Google Street View. If you buy something, your habit is put into a zillion profiles, and your ads will change to reflect those habits. "They" will try to get you to buy something else. Again and again.

Me: Unfortunately this is true. You can do things to fight it. Call your elected reps.

Obama, do we know him???

The following comes from an old friend, Larry P. I'm not sure where he got it, but my guess is that at least some of it originally came from a commentator in UrbanSurvival.

Parts supplied by Larry are quoted. My comments are in bold.

It was brought to light that back in 1961 people of color were called 'Negroes.' So how can this 'birth certificate' state he is
'African-American' when the term wasn't even used back then??

Here is a comment from a reader to George Ure at UrbanSurvival.

"As you all know, Donald Trump made a big deal about Obama's birth
certificate.

I will tell you right now that I had never given this "birther" issue any credit. I watched the hype and the crazies come out. I completely dismissed the entire ordeal altogether.

In fact, it was not until the White House released the birth certificate
that it had gained my attention. I am the studious sort of guy, and I have plenty of time on my hands. So, I took a close look at this document.

While I would have thought that this issue would have been closed for good (and, got the crazies to crawl back into their holes), I found two extremely strange inconsistencies that merit some attention.

First of all, the birth certificate that the White House released lists
Obama's birth as August 4, 1961. It also lists Barack Hussein Obama as
his father. No big deal, right? At the time of Obama's birth, it also
shows that his father is aged 25 years old, and that Obama's father was
born in " Kenya , East Africa ".

This wouldn't seem like anything of concern, except the fact that Kenya did not even exist until 1963, two whole years after Obama's birth, and 27 years after his father's birth. How could Obama's father have been born in a country that did not yet exist?

Up and until Kenya was formed in 1963, it was known as the "British East
Africa Protectorate". But, this is not the only thing that I found that
just does not jive.

Pre and Post-colonial history of Kenya

Wiki Link

Wiki Link

From the Wiki link: European and Arab presence in Mombasa dates to the Early Modern period, but European exploration of the interior began only in the 19th century. The British Empire established the East Africa Protectorate in 1895, from 1920 known as the Kenya Colony.

The other item that I looked into was the hospital that Obama was born in. On the birth certificate released by the White House, the listed place of birth is "Kapi'olani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital".

This cannot be, because the hospital(s) in question in 1961 were called "Kaui Keolani Children's Hospital" and "Kapi'olani Maternity Home",
respectively.

From the link: This is the story of two hospitals: Kauikeolani Children's Hospital and Kapi‘olani Maternity Home

The name did not change to Kapi'olani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital until 1978, when these two hospitals merged. How can this particular name of the hospital be on a birth certificate dated 1961 if this name had not yet been applied to it until 1978?

From the link: The two hospitals joined in 1978 to become Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children

Go ahead, look it up. I am not talking crazy talk, these are the facts.
Like I said, I thought that this was a non-issue until the actual certificate was released. Now that it has been released, of course I had
to look into it. I have found these issues, now I know that something is
up. If you doubt me, just look at the following resources:

Sure as hell, the hospital part is true, as you can read about the 1978
merger here.

Link

Now its not my job to vet Obama's birth certificate or analyze/refute claims that it is not true. But sometimes I think we over respond.

First, as the Wikipedia link shows, Kenya Colony was established in 1920 and known as that forward.

The link to the hospital link shows the pre 1978 merger name as Kapi‘olani Maternity Home. The birth certificate calls it “Kapi'olani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital.” The disparity between the two could be questioned, but since what we have is a Home Page produced (probably) 30 years after the merger I would guess that the name used in conversation was Kapi‘olani Maternity Home. The bureaucrat/nurse filling out the birth certificate used the legal name which was also the surviving name in the merger.

That’s not unusual. People routinely condense lengthy names.

The “Negroes” vs African-American is also interesting, but given that the father was an African national and the mother American I see the use of “African-American” in 1961 as not unusual. Especially in Hawaii due to the very high mixing of races. Chinese-American, Japanese-American. And I really have no reason to think that a mixed race child wouldn’t be identified that way.

So I see no smoking gun.

What I do see is this. Twenty four hours after Joe the Plumber had his short discussion with Obama the press had investigated him and we knew more about Joe from that 24 hour investigation than we know about Obama after 7 years.

That tells us this about the press. Obama, as a black person, was the perfect candidate for them. The press, being mostly liberal/left to the core see Obama existing only to allow them to atone for what they see as the sins of America by supporting him.

Now if they admit this he becomes a person. And a person can have failures. Strengths and weaknesses. And in a way the media's failure to vet him..... their failure to see him as a person is identical to how the Jim Crow racists of the South and around the world see blacks. They don't see blacks as "people." They see them as a group.

And if they had vetted Obama they would have discovered some bad things and some good things. And they would have had to decide if this Obama person was, on the whole, good or bad. Or at the least, made sure the country knew where he came from, what he had done, who he had associated with, what his views were.

But they did not. They failed themselves. They failed the country.

A sad saying about a group that is mentioned in the Constitution.

But we now know him. His actions speak.

And he will be a one term President.

Ford Crown Victoria and a Pig

The last Ford Crown Victoria rolled off a Canadian assembly line Thursday, marking the end of the big, heavy Ford cars that have been popular with taxi fleets and police departments for decades.

Since 1979, almost 10 million Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Cars -- so-called Panther Platform vehicles -- have been sold.

Link

Not to be too much of a stickler...okay, I am.

The Crown Vic first came out in 1955 replacing the 1954 Crestline Skyliner.

Link

Of course it may have went out and then brought back, as in the Chevy Impala, but to the best of my knowledge the model name was a constant, if not the quality. Ford slipped as badly, if not more so, than GM and Chrysler and AMC in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

I had a 1976 model equipped with a huge V8 that would pass everything but a service station. Back then I made most of my money as a salesman and then as now face time with the customer was required to be successful.

The 55 mph speed limit was a serious problem when your territory covered 4 states of the mid south.

But equipped with a CB and a radar detector I ventured forth each work day determined to avoid the law and see enough customers to become rich and famous. Or, more likely, make enough money to pay the mortgage, buy some groceries and keep the kids in school.

Then, as now, the appeal of the car was its size and the great ride. I once hit a 100 or so pound hog doing about 75. All of the knobs bounced off the radio and the hog was launched like from a catapult. Somehow I maintained control of the vehicle and brought it to a stop. Outside of having to put the radio knobs back on the only damage was a thin coating of what can best be described as unprocessed hog manure on the hood and windshield.

It was a smelly mess. Thank goodness my windshield washer/wipers were in prime condition.

A 2011 anything would have either bounced the hog up allowing me to run into it with my windshield or bounced over the unfortunate animal causing the car to flip. Either way I would have been dead or severely injured.

And Obama's experts can't figure out why Americans are partial to large cars.

After I got the car stopped I turned around and drove back to the spot of impact, which was in front of a small farm house with a barn a 100 yards or so from it. Standing beside the road was a farmer.

Now Tennessee had a fence law which said that you must keep your livestock penned and that you are responsible for all damage they do if they get outside the fence. An interesting law in that it has led to the belief that any “escaped” stock that has done any damage by, say, getting hit by a car automatically becomes free agents of unknown ownership.

But not in this case.

“Was that your hog?” I asked the farmer who had dragged the hog back to the side of the road.

“Mister, you didn’t need to hit my hog,” he replied with a look that said, “That was my winter’s meat you asshole. Wait right here while I go get my shotgun.”

I decided that sometimes things should just be left alone, got back in the pig shit covered Vic and drove away.

At the next small town I stopped, filled up with gasoline, washed the car off and called the highway patrol to report the “accident.”

“Any damage to the car?” the patrolman asked.

“Not really,” I said, “but I just want to make sure there’s a record in case I find some and decide to sue the farmer.”

After a lengthy pause.

“Now, who did you say you worked for? And it is a company owned car?”

I gave him the name and confirmed that it was the company’s car.

“Sir,” he said, “you want to sue a farmer after killing one of his hogs in a local court?”

“I might,” I said not sure as to the direction the conversation was taking.

“Well,” he said, “you can certainly do that but my guess is before that trial gets done the farmer will own the car, your employer and you.”

For the first time in my life I truly understood “Home Field Advantage.”

Guess who's coming to dinner?

Pass the bread, Mahmoud.

Columbia University students may get the unique chance this month to dine with madman Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad when he visits New York, according to the school's student newspaper.

In an email sent to members of the Columbia International Relations Council and Association, students are invited to a private dinner Sept. 21 in Midtown with the man whom University President Lee Bollinger introduced as “a petty and cruel dictator” when he spoke on campus in 2007.

Members of the group were notified earlier this summer that they would have a chance to bring 15 students to the dinner, The Columbia Spectator reported Saturday.

One can but hope the students will be as tough on him as they have been on Palin.

In another incident Sunday, a pair of fighter jets were scrambled to escort an American Airlines jet into New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport after the pilot became spooked by passengers' frequent trips to and from the restroom, ABC News reported.

The precaution turned out to be unnecessary as federal air marshals aboard American Flight 34 from Los Angeles to JFK were able to resolve the situation when the passengers complied with their instructions, police officials told ABC. The pilot then radioed that the situation was under control and the plane landed safely. Three male passengers were questioned upon arrival, but no charges were filed against them, authorities said.

Guess the pilots have never heard of an enlarged prostate.

Maybe the airlines could demand a doctor's excuse.

"To whom it may concern:

This guy will require 6 visits to the john for every 1 beer that he drinks."

Of course the airlines could stop selling beer. Nah, ain't gonna happen.

We had Relief Tubes in the military aircraft back in my youth. You held the tube, fired away and prayed that the line had not become frozen after previous use.
