A federal district court ruled Tuesday that the "I Believe" license plate approved by the S.C. Legislature violates the constitutional separation of church and state and cannot be issued.
In a summary judgment, U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie said the plate was based on a discriminatory law. "Such a law amounts to state endorsement not only of religion in general, but of a specific sect in particular," Currie said.
A vanity plate with "I believe" is a terrible threat to democracy.
I am just so glad that we stomped that out before (gasp) the Merry Christmas season.
If not for the vigilance of our federal judges, assisted I'm sure by the ACLU, these two mighty expressions might have joined together. "Merry Christmas" could have attacked up through the Ohio Valley while "I believe" worked its way up through Virgina. They could then have executed a pincher movement at Gettysburg and... there goes the Union.
