Mom sez...

"That's nice Honey. I'll see him when I get home."

Mom comes home......hears all manner of thumping and banging coming from her hall closet. Opens the door....out pops a midget Census Taker.....madder'n hell and screaming bloody murder.....

True story.......

Oil and the liesure class - Commentator's Comment Award

It's been a while since we have had a "Commentator's Comment Award." Not that there haven't been thousands that meet my strict standards, but that I have been slothful and lazy. That end's this morning with this jewel of a comment.

The subject was the oil leak in the Gulf and the use of oil by society. The venue is

are very adept at getting around outside of NYC. I would say that we can be very resourceful.

Interesting (for me anyway) development on the buses in NoCal since I last lived here, bus racks on the front of buses. And they are used :) Rapid transit cars also are all equipped for bikes, and they are also used. Yesterday, 3 bikers sitting next to me. None looked like a "biker" either. One was a pre-teen getting around. The key to good public transit is making it all work together. I can get anywhere throughout NoCal all on my own. And do. Everything hooks up and is scheduled together. Took just a bit of research up front.

Reducing a dependency on oil is fairly easy if you're willing to look around a bit and be not so creative. It's really more relaxing also, imo. And I'm not talking just transportation :) And just so you know, I haven't lived in a "concrete tower" in my life. I'm partial to Victorians ;)

Report from the eve of summer

Blogging has been scarce. What with the garden, yard work, and maintenance on the palatial retirement compound. And baseball... I really don't know how I managed to find time to work before retirement.

Over the past weeks I’ve had a birthday and an anniversary. Frankly, I never thought I would live this long and there is little doubt that I married a Saint. No ordinary female would have put up with me all these years.

I am and have been power washing the outside of the house and deck. The house because it has become dirty with some mold and the deck because it has collected mold and dirt, especially where the trees and bushes nudge up against it and must be cleaned before it is re-treated with water repellant and stain. Such is the penalty of living where snow and ice are rare occurrences.

The garden has caught up. The tomatoes are loading up with fruit… yes city boys and girls tomatoes are a fruit…and the cukes are growing so fast you can almost see them. We had fresh onions as a side salad dish last night and they were as sweet and tasty as your first kiss.

Coaching youth baseball is like herding cats… It can be done but only if the cats agree. I think that is true of most activities that our kids engage in. I practice loud praise in public and criticize quietly in the dugout. So far only one parent has decided the position that their child must play and after discussion he wisely agreed that the team needed his son’s strong arm in the outfield to turn the triples into doubles and singles.

Baseball is the most American sport because each player stands alone and performs before all who watch. It is the game of farmers and shop keepers and small business owners. There are routine plays after routine plays that must be done flawlessly with no great fanfare or expectation. Yet there are times when a player must step forward and do the unexpected great act. The diving stop to save a run and the game… the single up the middle by the “good field no hit” infielder.

But the best thing about baseball and kids is that it teaches them that the fun is in trying. And that while losing today’s game is bad there will be another game and that if they work hard and play hard they can win that next game.

Persistence is the most important virtue.

How Mexico does it... from someone who has been there

For anyone thinking we are being too hard on our illegals,

JUST READ THIS!!!

American working in Mexico

From the other side of the fence...

Received the following from Tom O'Malley, who was a Director with S.W. BELL in Mexico City:

"I spent five years working in Mexico. I worked under a tourist Visa for three months and could legally renew it for three more months. After that you were working illegally. I was technically illegal for three weeks waiting on the FM3 approval.

"During that six months our Mexican and U.S. attorneys were working to secure a permanent work visa called a 'FM3'. It was in addition to my U.S. passport that I had to show each time I entered and left the country. Barbara's was the same, except hers did not permit her to work.

"To apply for the FM3, I needed to submit the following notarized originals (not copies):

1. Birth certificate for Barbara and me.

2. Marriage certificate.

3. High school transcripts and proof of graduation.

4. College transcripts for every college I attended and

proof of graduation.

5. Two letters of recommendation from supervisors I had worked for at least one year.

6. A letter from the St. Louis Chief of Police indicating that I had no arrest record in the U.S. and no outstanding warrants and, was "a citizen in good standing".

7. "Finally, I had to write a letter about myself that clearly stated why there was no Mexican citizen with my skills and why my skills were important to Mexico. We called it our 'I am the greatest person on Earth' letter. It was fun to write."

"All of the above were in English that had to be translated into Spanish and be certified as legal translations, and our signatures notarized. It produced a folder about 1.5 inches thick with English on the left side &Spanish on the right."

"Once they were completed Barbara and I spent about five hours, accompanied by a Mexican attorney, touring Mexican government office locations and being photographed and fingerprinted at least three times at each location, and we remember at least four locations where we were instructed on Mexican tax, labor, housing, and criminal law and that we were required to obey their laws or face the consequences. We could not protest any of the government's actions or we would be committing a felony. We paid out four thousand dollars in fees and bribes to complete the process. When this was done we could legally bring in our household goods that were held by U.S. Customs in Laredo, Texas. This meant we had rented furniture in Mexico while awaiting our goods. There were extensive fees involved here that the company paid."

"We could not buy a home and were required to rent at very high rates and under contract and compliance with Mexican law."

"We were required to get a Mexican driver's license. This was an amazing process. The company arranged for the licensing agency to come to our headquarters location with their photography and fingerprint equipment and the laminating machine. We showed our U.S. license, were photographed and fingerprinted again and issued the license instantly after paying out a six dollar fee. We did not take a written or driving test and never received instructions on the rules of the road. Our only instruction was to never give a policeman your license if stopped and asked. We were instructed to hold it against the inside window away from his grasp. If he got his hands on it you would have to pay ransom to get it back. "

"We then had to pay and file Mexican income tax annually using the number of our FM3 as our ID number. The company's Mexican accountants did this for us and we just signed what they prepared. It was about twenty legal size pages annually."

"The FM3 was good for three years and renewable for two more after paying more fees."

"Leaving the country meant turning in the FM3 and certifying we were leaving no debts behind and no outstanding legal affairs (warrants, tickets or liens) before our household goods were released to customs."

"It was a real adventure and if any of our Senators or Congressmen went through it once they would have a different attitude toward Mexico."

"The Mexican government uses its vast military and police forces to keep its citizens intimidated and compliant. They never protest at their capitol or government offices, but do protest daily in front of the United States Embassy. The U.S. Embassy looks like a strongly reinforced fortress and during most protests the Mexican military surrounds the block with their men standing shoulder to shoulder in full riot gear to protect the Embassy. These protests are never shown on U.S. or Mexican TV. There is a large public park across the street where they do their protesting. Anything can cause a protest such as proposed law changes in California or Texas."

Muslim Heritage in America spelled out for Obama

The following was sent in by Larry P! It pretty well sums things up.

Barack OBAMA, during his Cairo speech, said: "I know, too, that Islam has always been a part of America's story."


AN AMERICAN CITIZEN'S RESPONSE:


Dear Mr. Obama:


Were those Muslims that were in America when the Pilgrims first landed? Funny, I thought they were Native American Indians.


Were those Muslims that celebrated the first Thanksgiving day? Sorry again, those were Pilgrims and Native American Indians.


Can you show me one Muslim signature on the United States Constitution?


Declaration of Independence?


Bill of Rights?


Didn't think so.



Did Muslims fight for this country's freedom from England? No.


Did Muslims fight during the Civil War to free the slaves in America? No, they did not. In fact, Muslims to this day are still the largest traffickers in human slavery.


Where were Muslims during the Civil Rights era of this country? Not present.


There are no pictures or media accounts of Muslims walking side by side with Martin Luther King, Jr. or helping to advance the cause of Civil Rights.


Where were Muslims during this country's Woman's Suffrage era? Again, not present. In fact, devout Muslims demand that women are subservient to men in the Islamic culture. So much so, that often they are beaten for not wearing the 'hajib' or for talking to a man who is not a direct family member or their husband. Yep, the Muslims are all for women's rights, aren't they?


Where were Muslims during World War II? They were aligned with Adolf Hitler. The Muslim grand mufti himself met with Adolf Hitler, reviewed the troops and accepted support from the Nazi's in killing Jews.


Finally, Mr. Obama, where were Muslims on Sept. 11th, 2001? If they weren't flying planes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon or a field in Pennsylvania killing nearly 3,000 people on our own soil, they were rejoicing in the Middle East. No one can dispute the pictures shown from all parts of the Muslim world celebrating on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC and other cable news networks that day. Strangely, the very "moderate" Muslims who's asses you bent over backwards to kiss in Cairo, Egypt on June 4th were stone cold silent post 9-11. To many Americans, their silence has meant approval for the acts of that day.


And THAT, Mr. Obama, is the "rich heritage" Muslims have here in America.


Oh, I'm sorry; I forgot to mention the Barbary Pirates. They were Muslim.


And now we can add November 5, 2009 - the slaughter of American soldiers at Fort Hood by a Muslim major who is a doctor and a psychiatrist who was supposed to be counseling soldiers returning from battle in Iraq and Afghanistan.


That, Mr. Obama is the "Muslim heritage" in America.
