So I said to this guy....
We’ve been cleaning, painting, and organizing the garage for about a week.
Yeah, in 90 plus temperature and 60-70% humidity.
Hey, I never claimed to be smart.
So I work til I’m completely wet and then come inside for a drink and update on FNC. In the garage I have Beck, Limbaugh and Hanity
on the radio
As I cool I can do some surfing the web. I’ve been hanging out at Talk Left for years and years. TL is focused on legal/crime issues and is more balanced than KOS or MoveOn but it does have its share of kooks and loons.
What runs some on the Left crazy is that I fancy myself a social liberal. I believe in minority rights, gay rights (including marriage), a woman’s right to chose and think we need to rationalize our illegal drug policy.
On the other hand I am more or less opposed to “programs” dedicated to minorities, believing that we have moved past that point and need a color blind “helping hand” based on need and scholastic achievement.
And while I believe in “gay rights” that doesn’t mean that I think we need “hate laws.” If someone harms a gay or a straight person the deed speaks for itself. The reason why is of no consequence. And I will tell gays that the Bible says their actions are wrong, just as it says you shouldn’t be humping your neighbor’s wife but I will let them work out the details with God. He’s been known to forgive and forget.
And I oppose abortion but I won’t tell a woman what she must do with her body. I will also say that we need more church sponsored adoption centers and less Hell and Damnation from the pulpit.
The drug thing is a tough one. Some drugs are addictive and damaging to people and society. Problem is the demand drives the supply and the obscene profits keep an endless supply of drugs and dealers. My solution is simple. Flood the market with free drugs obtained by signing up at your local pharmacy.
That’s it.
Just give you all you want until you decide to quit or kill yourself.
That’s how addiction works. You have to do the job yourself.
In the meantime if I caught anyone selling illegal drugs to anyone the penalty would be 5 years first offense. Death for the second.
That should cut down on the new addicts, although I would guess a few would develop.
I would legalize marijuana and sell it just like we sell liquor. Again getting rid of the drug dealer who would also sell you coke or heroin and making some tax dollars.
The police could concentrate on what few illegal dealers we have left and the assorted other crimes of violence society is prone to.
I also happen to believe in a strong defense and limited government spending. There is no doubt in my mind that we have allowed a nest of vipers to develop in a government-education-financial complex that is intent on turning our constitutional republic into a socialist democracy ran by and for the “elites.”
It’s these later positions that drive the Lefties insane. In their world you must not only be for equal rights you must also be for atoning for the sins of our fathers. Sorry. I owned no slaves and whatever good white society, as a whole, got from slavery was paid for in blood and treasure during the most unCivil war.
See? All of that written in about four hours and five breaks and six glasses of ice tea. Hold the sugar and the lemon.

Bits and pieces
I haven’t had much to write lately. Been too busy doing other things. Sad to say, life will interfere with blogging if you’re not careful.
The garden is, like me, in decline. The tomatoes are mostly gone but the cucumbers continue to produce. I do love sliced cukes, tomatoes, onions and bell peppers. This year I added banana peppers and they are delicious served fresh. We shall have plenty of pickle to spice up the dreary meals of the winter.
The okra is producing and producing and producing. I shall have plenty to prepare for cooking and then freezing for later. I call it candy and although there is no evidence of Cajun in my ancestors I must have been born under the “Coon Ass Star.”
Poker Player too has been busy working on various projects. After ridding the White House of rats, visiting Arizona to play and raising skinks and chickens he too took some time off but now says he has solved the man made global warming non-crisis.
Details later.
A young cat has adopted us. I have no idea where it came from, it just showed up thin as a piece of paper and as shy as can be. Blue, our 11 year old Persian, regards him with great disdains and ignores him at all times. I doubt that Blue could catch the youngster and that’s a good thing for both of them.
I am feeding it outside in an attempt to become friends. So far the results are not encouraging. My guess is that it was one of a litter born under a house or in a garage and was given to some child by another child and was then “taken off” by the adult in the recipients life. How cruel and cowardly that person was.
So I feed it. Sooner or later I will catch it and off to the Vet for shots and neutering/spaying we will go. Hopefully it will agree to living inside. But if not, that’s fine too.
I see that the judge has pretty well gutted AZ1070. Oh well, what would you expect from a Clinton appointee? I wonder if John Kyle would like to withdraw his glowing praise of this Leftie.
On to the SC!

Grumpy old me
Sen. John Kerry, who has repeatedly voted to raise taxes while in Congress, dodged a whopping six-figure state tax bill on his new multimillion-dollar yacht by mooring her in Newport, R.I.
Massachusetts still collects a 6.25 percent sales tax and an annual excise tax on yachts. Sources say Isabel sold for something in the neighborhood of $7 million, meaning Kerry saved approximately $437,500 in sales tax and an annual excise tax of about $70,000.
Link
Typical trick of the rich left wingers. Tax the rest of us and avoid paying themselves.
Kerry is especially depreciable. He inherited much and then married the rest. He has never had a job outside of government and lied about his Vietnam service.
Just the type person we want leading us.

P-8's, P3's, P5's and others
Hat tip to Dave T for the pic.
Nice shot of the Navy's new patrol plane, the P8 Poseidon. The aircraft following is the P3C Orion, which the P8 is replacing. That's the Patuxent River Naval Air Station in the background. Lovingly called Pax River it has an advantage of being close enough to D.C. for easy visits to the cultural attractions of our nation's capital not to mention some nice local bars.
Pax River is a long time test and training center and gateway for young men moving forward to more fun and adventure in some truly crappy places that happen to be located in places that facilitate the mission. Dave T remembers hunting rabbits in the fields and woods around the base. I'd bet you that no airman has his own shotgun on base now days.
The P8 is the military version of the Boeing 737 just as the P3 was the Lockheed Electra commercial airliner flown mostly by American, Eastern and Braniff Airlines. The P3 had, early on, the nasty habit of blowing up while on approach. If I remember correctly the problem was harmonic vibrations in the wing at certain aircraft speeds and nose attitude. Wing cracks would appear and fuel would leak into the prop jet and then "bang."
The fix was installing those little vertical slats/spoilers on the wings you can also see on other aircraft and adjusting the "tilt" of the engines. Breaks up the air flow just enough to stop the harmonic vibrations from building up. I think it only took two or three aircraft and 40-50 men to figure that out. And to be fair at least three commercial airliners blew up in mid air.
All of that is pretty much on memory. It may be that the commercial Electra first had its engine mounts strengthened/changed and then the vertical slats were installed later, driven by the military experience.
Aviation advances have their costs.
Patrol aircraft have always had conflicting requirements. The first is to be able to get on station quickly. The second is to be able to fly slow enough and have fuel enough to do the sub chasing maneuvers.
The P8 obviously has enough speed to get there quickly but I have no idea as to how it can handle the "low-slow and stay on station" requirements. The P3 use all four engines to go fast and then shut down two when on station to save fuel.
The above is Lockheed's P2V-7 Neptune, aka SP2H. It was replaced by the P3 starting in the early-mid 60's time frame. Yes, the Navy likes to get full value for its money.
The P2V-7 had two 3350's and two jets giving rise to the saying, "I got two turning and two burning and request clearance to land."
With two a turning and two a burning it could get along pretty fast but typically the jets were used only for take off and landing and the nose cone was a wonderful place to get a tan. Otherwise it was a cramped, noisy and uncomfortable aircraft stuffed full of electronics, fuel and weapons.
If you like the picture you can purchase one suitable for framing here.
The P5M came along in the late 40's early 50's. It was a pure seaplane and could stay on station a long time. It was originally equipped with 30 caliber machine gun's in the tail turret and side mounts. With 5 inch rockets and depth charges it could deal a pretty good lick. It also could handle a nuclear depth charge. The "We had to destroy the harbor to save it" never became a "saying."
And no one ever explained how a P5M could out run the shock wave after dropping one.
The machine guns were removed and the P5M-2 had a T tail. Prior to the late 50's it also featured WWII electronics. Under powered, it required Jato assist for take offs when fully loaded and loss of one engine was a real problem. Upgrades in the late 50's finally made it an effective ASW platform and removal of the armour surrounding the flight deck helped it to stay in the air on one engine.
Unlike the P2V it was fairly comfortable for the crew and had a galley where a crew member could actually cook meals on a two burner stove. Since all of the cooking was done away from the consumer it was understood that only a fool would anger the cook.
The P5M replaced the PBM, but like all of the replacements it was more of a merger rather than a serial approach. During the late 60's it served as patrol aircraft off the coast of Vietnam. At least one was shot down.
Nice video of a P5M-1 tooling around. Note the tail difference between the P5M-1 and the 2's T tail.
One good thing about a sea plane is that you have lots of places to land. In 1959 VP44 put one down at sea and then taxied 500 miles to Key West. During landing the ocean spray put out the engine fire before the wing fell off.
Lots of good folks spent lots of time in these aircraft looking for Soviet subs and ships. Some died in the attempt but everyone was united in the effort.
The peaceniks and traitors came later. I often wonder how today's military fights and dies knowing that some idiots despise them.
We need a "reset" in this country.

(CNSNews.com) – New federal regulations issued this week stipulate that the electronic health records--that all Americans are supposed to have by 2014 under the terms of the stimulus law that President Barack Obama signed last year--must record not only the traditional measures of height and weight, but also the Body Mass Index: a measure of obesity.
The obesity-rating regulation states that every American's electronic health record must: “Calculate body mass index. Automatically calculate and display body mass index (BMI) based on a patient’s height and weight.”
The law also requires that these electronic health records be available--with appropriate security measures--on a national exchange.
The new regulations are one of the first steps towards the government’s goal of universal adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) by 2014, as outlined in the 2009 economic stimulus law. Specifically, the regulations issued on Tuesday by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Dr. David Blumenthal, the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, define the "meaningful use" of electronic records. Under the stimulus law, health care providers--including doctors and hospitals--must establish "meaningful use" of EHRs by 2014 in order to qualify for federal subsidies. After that, they will be subjected to penalties in the form of diminished Medicare and Medicaid payments for not establishing "meaningful use" of EHRs.

U.S. Authorities Shut Down WordPress Host With 73,000 Blogs
After the U.S. Government took action against several sites connected to movie streaming recently, nerves are jangling over the possibility that this is just the beginning of a wider crackdown. Now it appears that a free blogging platform has been taken down by its hosting provider on orders from the U.S. authorities on grounds of “a history of abuse”. More than 73,000 blogs are out of action as a result.
Hot on the heels of recent threats from Vice President Joe Biden and Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator Victoria Espinel directed at sites offering unauthorized movies and music, last month U.S. authorities targeted several sites they claimed were connected to the streaming of infringing video material.
Looks like group punishment to me.
I guess due process doesn't mean anything to Obamie.

Texas Beer Joint Sues A Church
In a small Texas town, ( Mount Vernon ) Drummond's bar began construction on a new building to increase their business... A local church started a campaign to block the bar from opening with petitions and prayers. Work progressed right up till the week before opening when lightning struck the bar and it burned to the ground.
The church folks were rather smug in their outlook after that, until the bar owner sued the church on the grounds that the church was ultimately responsible for the demise of his building, either through direct or indirect actions or means.
The church vehemently denied all responsibility or any connection to the building's demise in its reply to the court .
As the case made its way into court, the judge looked over the paperwork...
At the hearing he commented, 'I don't know how I'm going to decide this, but as it appears from the paperwork, we have a bar owner who believes in the power of prayer, and an entire church congregation that does not.

Obama goofs again
Just after Abbas calls on Arab states to war against Israel, Obama calls him and expresses "strong support" for his "commitment to peace"
At the Arab League summit last week, Abbas said to the Arab states: "If you want war, and if all of you will fight Israel, we are in favor. But the Palestinians will not fight alone because they don't have the ability to do it."
Now you would think that our DOS and Pres would be kinda upset over that and saying..."Hey guys! Don't do it. Don't bite off more than you can chew.
But they didn't.
Aren't surprised, are you?

Readout of the President's Call with President Abbas of the Palestinian Authority
The President spoke with Palestinian Authority President Abbas today. The President expressed strong support for President Abbas's leadership on behalf of the Palestinian people and his commitment to peace. The President noted the positive momentum generated by the recent improvements on the ground in Gaza and in the West Bank, the restraint shown by both sides in recent months, and progress in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian proximity talks. He and President Abbas reviewed ways to advance to direct talks in the near term, in order to reach an agreement that ends the conflict, and establishes an independent and viable Palestinian state living side by side in peace and security with Israel. The President noted that Special Envoy Mitchell would travel to the region soon and meet with President Abbas to build on this momentum to advance our common goals.

Obama and the Magic Solar Solution
US President Barack Obama announced on Saturday the awarding of nearly two billion dollars to two solar energy companies that have agreed to build new power plants in the United States, creating thousands of new jobs.
One of the companies, Abengoa Solar, has agreed to build one of the largest solar plants in the world in Arizona, which will create about 1,600 construction jobs. When completed, this plant will provide enough clean energy to power 70,000 homes.
The other company, Abound Solar Manufacturing, is building two new plants, one in Colorado and one in Indiana.
These projects will create more than 2,000 construction jobs, and over 1,500 permanent jobs as the plants produce millions of solar panels each year, according to White House officials.
Uh, not so fast there varmints.
Abengoa Solarhas not produced a commercially available non-governmental power plant in the US. If it produces solar panels I can't confirm that by reading its home page. It does lay claim to producing a "tracker" which may or may not have some new technology in it.
What it appears to be is in the solar power generating business using OEM products and its own "tracker." Now there is nothing wrong with that, but given the experience Spain has had with solar power we should be viewing it with eyes wide open. Especially when two billion dollars of our money is being tossed around.
And if they don't manufacture a product, what are the on going jobs besides construction of power plants? Nothing wrong with that, but let us not think of a factory setting in Waycross, GA, for example, providing two or three thousands jobs on an on going basis.
Of course the real question is this. Can solar energy produce electric power that is competitive? The present price of electricity to the consumer is around 10-15 cents per KWH in a large part of the country. We have a fair size home, about 3400 square feet and it is well insulated and I have installed energy efficient appliances so my results won't be typical, but we use about 70 KWH per day. At 10 cents that is $210 per month. At 15 cents that's $300. (We're currently at 10 cents.)
Looking at Abengoa's Home Page we see the current wholesale price of electricity generated by fossil fuels at around 7 cents. Assuming my price has some water power generation along with coal and a mark up of 35% wholesale to retail that tracks pretty well if you again assume no new distribution construction costs.
It also shows Concentrated Solar Power - CSP - at 20 cents and Photovoltaic at 30 cents. And the good news is by 2017 CSP is at 10 cents.
It also shows Photovoltaic at about 15 cents at the same time.
Sorry Charlie, but I just don't believe that technology will produce a 50% reduction in price in 7 years. TANSTAAFL. There aint no such thing as a free lunch.
But even if did happen the consumer/retail price would be up about 33% in 7 years.
In other words that $210 bill will be near $300. That current $300 bill will be $400.
That is a nice return on your investment, eh?
Abound Solar is a manufacture of solar panels. Founded by professors from CSU it says it will add another manufacturing line with its $400 million loan guarantee.
There is no word about how much money will be paid to CSU, and the tax payers, who employed the inventors. I expect this will be State Capitalism at its best.

Don't get sick - Rationing and Death Panels coming up
The Obama administration has not ruled out turning sick people away from an insurance program created by the new healthcare law to provide coverage for the uninsured.
Critics of the $5 billion high-risk pool program insist it will run out of money before Jan. 1, 2014. That’s when the program sunsets and health plans can no longer discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions.
You are not surprised, are you? But they have a fix.
Officials said the administration could also consider reducing benefits under the program
